When a young gang leader in Minneapolis was left on life support after a brutal street attack, doctors gave him only six hours to live. His family had already signed the papers. But when an Imam and a group of Muslim youth visited his hospital bed and recited the Quran over him, something miraculous happened — and it changed his life forever. Imam Sheikh Hassan from Minnesota shares this extraordinary true story and more on The Deen Show.
From Gang Leader to Servant of Allah
The young man had been in a coma for 30 days after a rival gang nearly slashed his throat. When the Imam placed his hand on his and asked, “Will you promise that if God gives you your life back, you will join the dawah caravan to help other youth off the streets?” — for the first time, the young man moved his head in agreement. Weeks later, he walked into the Islamic center, alive and ready to honor his promise. Through a comprehensive Islamic rehabilitation program — including Quran education, GED studies, martial arts training, and spiritual mentorship — he was transformed from a gang leader into a productive member of the Muslim community.
“We do not only teach Quran — we are connected to the young person’s daily life. The first thing we teach them when they come home from school: kiss your mother and father, say thank you, and ask how you can help.” — Imam Sheikh Hassan
How Islam Rescues At-Risk Youth
- The Islamic center provides a complete system: spiritual education, academic tutoring, physical training through sports and martial arts, and removal of harmful influences
- In just one year, approximately 50 non-Muslim young people accepted Islam after seeing the positive transformation in Muslim youth — including a 13-year-old Caucasian boy named David whose father called the center seeking help
- Parents are counseled to bring their children into structured Islamic programs that replace television, music, and street culture with beneficial activities
- The concept of tarbiyah (Islamic disciplining) addresses the whole person: spiritual, educational, and physical development
“When David’s father called, he asked: ‘Is it true that if someone joins your center, they become drug-free, gang-free, everything bad — free?’ The word had spread. David accepted Islam that very night and changed his life for the better.”
Islam provides a complete system for transforming lives — not through force, but through the mercy and guidance of Allah. Whether you are a parent concerned about your children, a young person caught up in the streets, or someone simply searching for meaning, the door of the mosque is open. Accepting Islam means declaring that there is only One God worthy of worship and choosing to follow the beautiful example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in every aspect of life.
