Morality in Islam

In a world where the definition of right and wrong shifts with every generation and every culture, Islam provides a timeless and comprehensive moral framework rooted in divine revelation. This lecture by Brother Yaser Birjas explores where morality comes from, why it matters, and what happens to societies that abandon it.

Where Does Morality Come From?

Islam recognizes three main sources of morality. The first and highest is divine revelation through the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The second is human reasoning and intellect, but only when it operates in harmony with Godly guidance. A scholar beautifully compared the relationship between revelation and reason to that of eyesight and light: perfect vision is useless in a dark room without light, and similarly, intellect without divine guidance cannot reliably distinguish right from wrong.

“In Islam, keeping a promise is not only right, ethical, and good for business. There is an extra element added: it is also a religious obligation.”

The Consequences of Immorality

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned that when people withhold obligatory charity, Allah withholds rain from the sky
  • When sexual immorality spreads and is publicized, diseases emerge that never existed in previous nations
  • When people are dishonest in their transactions, their enemies prosper at their expense
  • When rulers judge by other than what Allah revealed, tyranny and oppression follow

Be an Advocate, Not Just a Bystander

Islam teaches that it is not enough to simply be a moral person in private. Every Muslim has an obligation to actively stand against immorality. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever sees wrongdoing should change it with their hand; if unable, then speak against it; and if unable even to speak, then at least denounce it in the heart. Societies crumble when people become desensitized to evil through constant exposure, gradually accepting what was once unthinkable.

“The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) summed up his entire mission: ‘I was sent by Allah to complete the perfection of good character.’ His message is about spreading morality in all aspects of life.”

Marriage, Community, and Personal Responsibility

  • Marriage in Islam adds a sacred ethical dimension, with Allah as witness to the vows between husband and wife
  • Marriage is not about two people getting married to be happy; it is about two people getting married to make each other happy
  • In the Quran, the sign of marriage is mentioned before the sign of the creation of the heavens and the earth, highlighting its immense importance
  • Islam means peace, submission, and wholeness, offering a complete way of life that addresses every moral challenge humanity faces
