Is God in His Creation?

One of the most profound questions in Islamic theology — and one that touches the heart of every sincere believer — is: where is Allah? It is a question addressed directly in the Quran, affirmed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and confirmed by the consensus of the early Muslim scholars (salaf). Understanding the correct Islamic answer is not merely an academic exercise; it is central to sound faith (aqeedah), meaningful worship, and a spiritually grounded relationship with the Creator. And crucially, this understanding protects the Muslim from two opposite dangers: anthropomorphism — comparing Allah to His creation — and pantheism, which teaches that God is literally present inside everything He created.

Allah Is Above His Throne: The Quranic and Prophetic Evidence

“He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then rose over (istawa) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, and what descends from the heaven and what ascends thereto. And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be.” [Quran 57:4]

The Quran is unambiguous on this matter. Allah, exalted be He, tells us repeatedly that He rose over His Throne (istawa) in a manner befitting His Majesty — affirming His transcendence above all creation. The Prophet ﷺ once asked a young woman “Where is Allah?” and she pointed upward. He declared her a believer. This narration does not invite crude literalism or an attempt to picture Allah as occupying physical space within the universe; rather, it establishes the correct orientation of the heart and mind — that Allah is elevated, supreme, and entirely beyond His creation. Allah is Al-Ahad, uniquely One, and there is nothing whatsoever like Him. Even when the Quran describes Him as having a face and hands, the believer accepts these descriptions while firmly rejecting any resemblance to human attributes. To speculate beyond what has been revealed is to step into territory that neither the Quran nor the Sunnah sanctions. The position of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama’ah has always been to affirm both that Allah is above His Throne and that He is with His slaves — reconciling these two truths without contradiction, and without distortion of either.

  • Allah rose over His Throne (istawa) in a manner befitting His Majesty — affirmed in multiple Quranic verses, including [32:4], [10:3], and [57:4]
  • The Prophet ﷺ validated pointing upward as a valid expression of correct belief in Allah’s transcendence
  • Allah’s divine attributes — Al-Aleem (All-Knowing), Al-Baseer (All-Seeing), Al-Wadud (Most Loving) — are boundless and all-encompassing, but this refers to His attributes, not His physical Essence
  • Ahl al-Sunnah affirm both Allah’s transcendence above creation and His nearness by knowledge and mercy, holding both without contradiction
  • Speculating about the precise “how” of divine attributes is discouraged; acceptance of the revealed text — without likening and without denial — is the correct Islamic approach

Allah’s Nearness Is Not Pantheism — A Critical Distinction Every Muslim Must Know

When Muslims say “Allah is everywhere,” they must be precise — because those words, carelessly used, can slide into the theological error of pantheism. Pantheism holds that God literally permeates His universe: that He is physically present in every rock, tree, and creature. Islam categorically rejects this. What is truly everywhere is Allah’s knowledge, His sight, His hearing, His mercy, His love, and His forgiveness — His divine attributes are boundless and all-encompassing. But Allah Himself, in His Essence, is not mixed with or contained within His creation. The Quran makes this distinction explicit in Surah Al-Mujadila [58:7], informing us of Allah’s all-encompassing knowledge of every secret gathering while simultaneously affirming that He is above His Throne. There is no contradiction — only the recognition that the Creator is qualitatively unlike anything He has made. Creation has a beginning; Allah is eternal, without beginning or end. Creation occupies space; Allah transcends the very categories of space and time that He Himself originated. When a Muslim says “God is everywhere,” they are affirming the reach of His knowledge and mercy — not making a pantheistic claim about His physical presence in creation.

Keeping Faith Unshakeable: Why This Distinction Protects the Believer

“He is the First (nothing is before Him) and the Last (nothing is after Him), the Most High (nothing is above Him) and the Most Near (nothing is nearer than Him).” [Quran 57:3]

Classical philosophical challenges — such as the famous “immovable rock” paradox — are designed to destabilise faith by trapping believers in the logic of the created world. The Islamic answer is clean and decisive: Allah is not bound by the physical laws He created, and He does not interact with creation through brute force or material constraint. When He wills something, He says “Be” — and it is (kun fayakun). This is not the logic of levers and fulcrums; it is the logic of absolute divine sovereignty. The moment we allow God to be confined within creation — subject to the same spatial and physical constraints as His creatures — we have reduced Him to something that philosophy can dismantle and doubt can devour. This is precisely why the guidance of Islam, rooted in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah, places such importance on keeping the conception of Allah pure, elevated, and free from comparison to anything in creation. Affirm what Allah has revealed about Himself. Accept His names and attributes without likening them to anything created. Return to the scholars when confusion arises. This is the path of spiritual clarity, intellectual integrity, and enduring faith in Islam — a faith that can be shared with confidence, defended without embarrassment, and lived with deep inner serenity.
