I Used to Love Pork & Bacon But Now I Love Islam

Growing up on the South Side of Chicago as an African-American Puerto Rican, Keenan’s life was defined by the same cycle that traps millions of young men: partying, drinking, smoking, and chasing a lifestyle that looks normal when everyone around you is doing it. But when he learned at eighteen that he was about to become a father, everything changed. A childhood friend who happened to be Muslim introduced him to Islam, and what he found was a peace and purpose that no club, no bottle, and no paycheck could ever provide.

From the Streets to Submission

Keenan’s parents separated when he was just three or four years old, and he spent his youth moving between their homes. By high school, the party lifestyle had taken full hold. Though he always believed in a higher power and secretly prayed in his room, he was confused about who he was praying to. Christianity presented him with three figures, Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, and he could never reconcile which one deserved his direct worship. Islam cut through that confusion with absolute clarity: pray directly to your Creator, no intermediary, no confusion.

Even though I went to church, I was confused about who I should pray to. There were three: the Holy Ghost, Jesus, and God. I always had that question in my mind. Islam answered that clearly: one God, pray directly to Him.

Why Islam Made Sense

  • His Muslim friend’s character, his manners, his calm demeanor, and his way of life planted the first seed of curiosity about Islam
  • Learning that Allah is the same God worshiped by Adam, Abraham, Jesus, and Muhammad made everything unquestionably clear
  • He accepted Islam after 9/11, at a time when the whole world was trying to demonize Muslims, because the facts spoke louder than the media
  • Islam gave him purpose beyond the material world: living for God rather than living for today

I used to love pork and bacon, but when you find the truth, you willingly give up what harms you for what benefits you. Islam replaced the emptiness with peace, the confusion with clarity, and the despair with hope.

Keenan’s story is a living proof that Islam continues to attract thinking, sincere people despite every effort to suppress it. When the entire world is aligned against a way of life and it still continues to blossom, that is one of the clearest signs that it is the truth from the One who created you. The invitation is simple: stop following the crowd, stop numbing yourself with temporary pleasures, and give your heart back to the One who created it. Until you do, true peace will remain out of reach.
