How You Can Start Living a Healthy Life Today!

Obesity, heart disease, and chronic illness are rising at alarming rates, yet Islam provided comprehensive health guidance over 1,400 years ago through the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the natural remedies found in the Quran and Sunnah. A Doctor of Oriental Medicine shares how Muslims and all people can start living healthier lives today by returning to the prophetic approach of natural healing, clean eating, and preventive care.

The Prophetic Approach to Health and Healing

Islam advocates using the natural means that Allah has provided — the plants, herbs, foods, and healing techniques described in the Sunnah. One of the most powerful traditions is hijama (cupping therapy), supported by over 15-20 authentic ahadith. During the Prophet’s Night Journey (Isra and Mi’raj), every angel he passed told him to prescribe hijama to his Ummah. In Sahih Bukhari, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that among the best of remedies is hijama.

“When you look at the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the foods they used to eat, the natural medicines they used — it’s a totally different era. Islam advocates using the means that Allah has sent down to us through the natural foods, plants, and herbs.”

Practical Health Tips From an Islamic Perspective

  • Go natural first — Use the safest, most natural remedies before resorting to pharmaceuticals that carry dozens of side effects and long-term toxicities
  • Purify your water — Invest in quality water filtration for your entire home supply, not just refrigerator filters
  • Practice moderation in eating — The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the son of Adam fills no vessel worse than his stomach; one-third food, one-third water, one-third air
  • Eliminate processed foods — Replace sugars and processed items with organic vegetables, fruits, and whole foods as Allah created them

“The son of Adam doesn’t fill anything worse than the belly. Enough is some few morsels of food to keep his back upright — one third food, one third air, and one third water.”

Reclaiming the Medicine of the Prophet

The tradition of prophetic medicine is being revived across the Muslim world and beyond. Cupping, herbal remedies, dietary therapy, and a holistic approach to wellness are not alternatives to modern medicine — they are the foundation upon which a truly healthy life is built. When we take care of the body that Allah has entrusted to us with the guidance He has provided, we fulfill a sacred responsibility and experience the vibrant, energetic life that every believer deserves.
