How to Love the Prophet (SAW)

To say “I love the Prophet ﷺ” is one of the most profound declarations a Muslim can make — and yet, if that love lives only in words spoken at conferences and gatherings, it has not yet fulfilled its purpose. True love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a living, active force: one that fills the heart, shapes the tongue, governs every dealing with family, neighbours, and wealth, and ultimately transforms the entire character of the believer. It is so central to faith that Allah ﷻ made it a condition of belief itself — not a bonus for the spiritually advanced, but a foundation without which a Muslim’s Islam remains incomplete. Understanding what that love demands, and how to build it, is one of the most urgent calls in the Quran and Sunnah.

The Quranic Test: Following the Prophet ﷺ as the Proof of Love

Allah ﷻ did not leave the question of love unanswered. In Surah Ali Imran He issued a direct challenge to all who claim to love Him: “Say, if you love Allah, then follow me — and Allah will love you” (3:31). This single ayah establishes an unbreakable link between following the Prophet ﷺ and earning Allah’s love in return. The scholars explain that Allah put this verse as a test — a public sieving — for those who proclaimed their devotion. Following the Sunnah is therefore not merely one expression of love; it is the only gateway through which that love is proven and returned. And that love, according to the Prophet ﷺ himself, must be total — deeper even than a person’s love for his own life. When ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab ؓ said he loved the Prophet ﷺ above everything except his own self, the Prophet ﷺ replied: “Not until I am dearer to you than your own self.” The moment ‘Umar declared that complete love, the Prophet ﷺ confirmed: “Now you are a true believer, O ‘Umar.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6257.) This is Islam’s model of sincere love — love that costs something and changes everything:

“No one of you truly believes until I am dearer to him than his father, his son, his own self, and all of the people.” — The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Sahih al-Bukhari 15; Sahih Muslim 44

  • Love for the Prophet ﷺ must exceed love for wealth, family, desires, and even one’s own preferences.
  • Following his Sunnah — in worship, character, speech, and conduct — is the lived proof of love, not a verbal declaration alone.
  • Obedience to the Prophet ﷺ is, by Allah’s own declaration, obedience to Allah Himself (Surah al-Nisa’ 4:80).
  • Those who oppose the Messenger’s commandments are warned of a fitnah that may reach the level of shirk (Surah al-Nur 24:63).
  • Learning his life — his manners, his worship, his example in every sphere — is the practical key to imitating him and drawing near to Allah ﷻ.

Why the Prophet ﷺ Is the Only Road to Allah’s Love and the Mercy of the Hereafter

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) explained the spiritual logic behind this love with rare precision. We cannot attain the greatest good in this life or the next except through the Prophet ﷺ — because no one is saved from Allah’s punishment, and Allah’s mercy reaches no one, except by way of him: by believing in him, loving him, being loyal to him, and following him. This is the means through which darkness becomes light. The Prophet ﷺ himself illustrated this with the image of a man who lights a fire while moths and insects hurl themselves into the flames — and he desperately tries to drag them back. That is us: pulled toward destruction by our sins and desires, while the Prophet ﷺ, out of boundless compassion, reaches out to save us. Allah ﷻ confirmed this closeness in Surah al-Ahzab: “The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves” (33:6). Ibn Katheer (رحمه الله) explains this as a direct consequence of how much sincerity, mercy, and compassion Allah ﷻ knew His Messenger held for the ummah — so Allah made him closer to us than we are to ourselves.

“The reason it is obligatory to love the Prophet ﷺ more than any other person is that we cannot attain the greatest good in this world or in the Hereafter except at his hands — by believing in him and following him. This is the means by which Allaah saves a person from punishment and grants him what is good, in both worlds.” — Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, Majmoo’ al-Fatawa, 27/246

The scholars remind us that Allah’s love is not merely a title — it is a reality that transforms the Hereafter entirely. If Allah loves you, what hardship will He permit to fall on you when you meet Him? What mercy will He withhold when people are standing in fear on the Day of Judgement? The path to that protection, that mercy, and that eternal bliss runs directly through sincere and consistent following of the one sent as a mercy to all the worlds — Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ. True love for him begins in the heart, overflows into the tongue and the limbs, governs every transaction and relationship, and ultimately earns the love of the One who created us. May Allah ﷻ make us among those who truly know the Prophet ﷺ, study his life with eagerness, follow his guidance with sincerity, and are gathered with him on the Day when all other relationships will fall away — except this one.
