How Did We Get the Qur’an?

How was the Quran compiled, and what evidence proves it is the unchanged, unaltered word of God? Dr. Muhammad Mahdi, former professor at Johns Hopkins University, takes us through the remarkable journey of the Quran — from its revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over 23 years, through its meticulous preservation by memorization and writing, to the standardized copies distributed during the time of Caliph Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

The Quran’s Journey from Revelation to Preservation

The Quran did not fall from the sky as a completed book. It was revealed gradually over 23 years through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah Himself guaranteed its preservation: “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran, and indeed, We will be its guardian” (15:9). This divine promise has been fulfilled in ways no other scripture can claim — with over 9 million people worldwide who have memorized the entire Quran from cover to cover, all 604 pages, and the number continues to grow daily.

“If any single contradiction had ever been proven in the Quran, Muslims would abandon it — finished. But the Quran itself challenges humanity: if it were from anyone other than God, you would find many contradictions in it. No one has ever met that challenge.” — Dr. Muhammad Mahdi

The Steps of Compilation

  • During the Prophet’s lifetime: Every verse was memorized by multiple companions and written on available materials (leather, bones, palm leaves) under the Prophet’s direct supervision
  • Under Abu Bakr: After many memorizers were martyred in battle, the Quran was compiled into a single bound manuscript (mushaf)
  • Under Uthman: Seven standardized copies were made and distributed to major cities, with all variant personal copies ordered to be destroyed to prevent any confusion
  • Later additions: Dots and diacritical marks were added during the time of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan to aid non-Arab readers — these were changes to the writing system, not to the text itself

“If some invention erased all writing from every book on earth, the Quran could be perfectly rewritten within days from the memory of millions of people in every corner of the world. It is the only book on earth that could make this claim.” — Dr. Muhammad Mahdi

The preservation of the Quran is not a matter of blind faith — it is a historically documented, scientifically verifiable fact. We invite every sincere seeker of truth to pick up the Quran, read it with an open heart, and witness for yourself why over 1.5 billion people have placed their trust in this Book as the literal, unchanged word of the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
