The scholars of Islam have described the reality of Hellfire in terms that should shake every believer to their core. The descriptions found in the authentic hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) paint a picture so terrifying that no sane person would risk it for the temporary pleasures of this world.
The Magnitude of the Fire
On the Day of Resurrection, Hellfire will be brought forward, and its enormity is beyond human comprehension. According to the hadith narrated by Ibn Masoud, each chain holding it will require seventy thousand angels to pull, and the Fire itself will cover the entire horizon.
“On the Day of Resurrection, the person will be asked: ‘O son of Adam, have you enjoyed any happiness? Have you seen any enjoyment?’ And he will reply: ‘No, my Lord. I have seen nothing. I have seen nothing.'”
The Heat We Feel Is a Reminder
Even the extreme heat we experience on hot summer days serves as a prophetic reminder:
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the severe heat of summer is from the breath of Hellfire
- Hellfire is so intense that its flames consume each other
- The Fire will continue to be filled and will ask: “Are there any more?”
“The severe heat that we experience in the hot summer days is from the breath of Hellfire, as mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari.”
These descriptions are not meant to cause hopelessness but to inspire urgency. Every moment we have in this life is an opportunity to seek Allah’s protection from the Fire through sincere worship, repentance, and righteous deeds. May Allah protect us all from the punishment of the grave and the torment of Hellfire.
