Health and Hijama | Part 1 | Advice on Nutrition – Ustadh Ramiz Ibrahim

The Muslim ummah has a food problem — and it is killing us. While non-Muslims often turn to alcohol and drugs in times of stress, Muslims tend to gorge themselves with food, fizzy drinks, and sugar, getting an emotional high from overeating. The statistics are alarming: one in three Asians will have type 2 diabetes by age 45 if current dietary trends continue. High-carbohydrate diets, excessive sugars, and a complete disconnection from the prophetic guidance on eating are creating a health crisis that undermines our ability to worship Allah with strength and vitality. This episode with Ustadh Ramiz Ibrahim delivers a wake-up call grounded in both nutritional science and Islamic teachings.

We Are Eating Ourselves to the Grave

“The way Coca-Cola is made, the amount of sugar and salt inside the can should make you vomit — but they put a chemical inside it to prevent you from vomiting. In America, they carry gallons of it in ambulances because it cleans blood very well. And we drink this.”

The episode exposes the shocking reality of what we consume daily without question. Food challenges glorify eating massive quantities in record time. Fizzy drinks that double as toilet cleaners and rust removers are consumed by the liter. Mega-burgers loaded with saturated fats are treated as normal meals. Meanwhile, the Quran commands us: “Eat of the good things which We have provided for you” and “Eat of what is lawful and wholesome on the earth.” A 995-calorie mega burger is hardly what Allah meant by “wholesome.”

  • One in three Asians will develop type 2 diabetes by age 45 on current diets of high saturated fats and sugars
  • Coca-Cola contains chemicals that prevent the natural vomit reflex that should occur from its sugar content
  • Muslims turn to food and sugar instead of alcohol and drugs for emotional comfort — creating a unique health crisis in the ummah
  • Guilt is a major emotional trigger for overeating — addressing the psychological relationship with food is essential
  • Coconut oil, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar all support weight loss when combined with eliminating processed foods
  • Organic vegetables can be juiced to make 1.5-2 liters that last several days — making healthy eating affordable and practical

The Prophetic Model: 95% Wholesome, Treat Yourself Occasionally

“Make your life 95% healthy and then you can treat yourself now and again. Wholesome foods, organic foods — eat of what is lawful and wholesome on the earth. That is the Quranic command.”

The practical advice is not about perfection or deprivation — it is about consistency and consciousness. Make 95% of your diet real, wholesome, organic food as Allah intended, and allow occasional treats without guilt. Juice your vegetables, eliminate fizzy drinks, reduce processed carbohydrates, and return to the prophetic practice of eating moderately. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to fill one-third of our stomach with food, one-third with water, and leave one-third empty. If the ummah would simply follow this one Sunnah, our health crisis would be transformed. Your body is an amanah — stop poisoning it and start nourishing it with what the Creator designed for you.
