Bobby, a Macedonian Orthodox Christian from the Balkans who grew up in Germany, decided to read the Quran with one purpose: to find the devil in it. Fueled by Hatred, He Opened the Quran
Bobby’s anti-Islam sentiment was deeply personal. The 2001 conflict between Macedonians and Albanians left him convinced that Muslims were enemies of Christianity. In Germany, the Muslim youth around him were involved in drugs, prostitution, and crime — confirming every negative assumption. When he returned to his Orthodox Christian faith, he found David Wood and other Islamophobes who seemed to validate everything he believed. So when Muslims invited him to read the Quran, he accepted eagerly, confident he would find the devil.
“For my wife, it is the most surprising thing that I now read the Quran — because she got to know me as somebody that really hated Islam. I really tried hard to find the devil within, but I couldn’t find it at all. How could I, in a book that worships God first and foremost?”
The Trinity Never Made Sense
Bobby admits that even as a devout Orthodox Christian, he always had “humongous issues with the Trinity.” When he read the Quran and encountered the pure monotheism of Islam — one God, no partners, no son, no confusion — it clicked immediately. The Islamophobes he had followed spent most of their time attacking Islam rather than actually explaining Christianity, which in hindsight revealed the weakness of their own position.
“I grew up as a Christian and he said ‘people are partying, people are drinking, they don’t care, they’re in their 30s and still don’t have kids’ — and he said ‘that’s what Muslims believe in? That’s weird.’ I said ‘No, that’s what WE believe in.’ He said ‘I might convert to Islam right now.'”
