Raised as an atheist in the UK, Omar Dexter spent his youth fighting, making mischief, and believing that science had all the answers. But by fifteen, the big questions about life’s purpose began gnawing at him, and nothing in his secular environment could provide satisfying answers. His journey would take him from the streets of Derby to the open seas of the Merchant Navy, through some of the most troubled corners of the world, and eventually to Islam, where he found the truth he had been searching for all along.
Searching for Answers in All the Wrong Places
Omar read the Bible repeatedly, visited several churches, and found a troubling disconnect: Christians were not practicing what was written in their own book. The Old Testament and the Gospels seemed to carry one message, while the later epistles put an entirely different twist on it, and none of it came from the mouth of Jesus (peace be upon him). Meanwhile, his career in the Merchant Navy exposed him to the worst of humanity: drug smuggling, corruption, and moral decay fueled by alcohol and adultery. Even working for prestigious companies like BMW and Jaguar Land Rover left him empty.
I read the Bible again and again, some parts a hundred times. What I saw was that Christians were not practicing what was written in their book. The Old Testament and the Gospels carried one message, but then there was a whole bunch of other stuff that seemed to say something completely different.
Why Islam Made Sense
- Islam aligned with everything he found authentic in the Bible while resolving all the contradictions that troubled him
- During a business trip to Dubai, he witnessed the best attributes of Muslim character and realized that Muslims were living the values Christianity only preached
- After returning from Hajj, he became vice chairman of his local mosque and devoted himself to charity work and community service
- Islam provided the complete moral framework he had been searching for: clear rules on alcohol, relationships, honesty, and accountability
Islam is not for just a bunch of intellectuals. It is for everybody. It is not just for the imam. It is for the whole of humanity, worshiping God the way He told us to worship Him.
Omar’s advice is as practical as it is profound: stay away from alcohol and adultery, because these are the root causes of almost every social evil he witnessed across the globe. The recipe for destruction is always the same, and so is the recipe for salvation. Islam provides both the diagnosis and the cure, and it does so with the simplicity and clarity that only divine guidance can offer. Whether you are a physicist, a sailor, or an ordinary person seeking purpose, the path to truth begins with honest inquiry and ends with submission to the Creator.
