EXCLUSIVE: Why Kevin Lee accepted Islam | TheDeenShow #957

When UFC veteran Kevin Lee appeared on ESPN and declared his acceptance of Islam, it sent ripples through the combat sports world. The American former lightweight contender, who competed at the highest levels of mixed martial arts across the UFC and EFC, revealed a deeply personal spiritual transformation that had been years in the making. His journey to the shahada is one of searching, humbling, and ultimately finding the purpose of life through submission to the Creator.

A Fighter’s Search for Meaning Beyond the Cage

Kevin Lee’s path to Islam began not in a mosque but inside the arena. In 2018, before his fight against former world champion Rafael dos Anjos, Lee experienced a profound spiritual stirring he could not explain. Though he lost that bout, the experience ignited a relentless inner question: what does it all mean? After a successful 2019 that included fighting at Madison Square Garden, Lee’s ego took over, and he credited himself for every victory. It was not until his 2020 fight against Charles Oliveira that reality hit hard, forcing his heart open and leading him to confront the truth that he was not the one in control.

“I feel like Allah was speaking to me that night and it took me a long time to recognize the voice and to understand it. My heart didn’t really open up to it being Islam until about 2020. On my birthday, I had an experience where I felt like God really came to me and said, ‘You’ve been a Muslim your whole life, you just haven’t accepted it. You’ve been stuck in your own ego for so long.'”

Walking Into the Mosque and Taking the Shahada

In October 2021, Kevin Lee walked into a mosque for the first time as an adult and officially declared his faith by taking the shahada. Growing up in Detroit, Lee had an aunt named Veronica Muhammad who was Muslim, but stereotypes and misconceptions kept his heart closed for years. Once he surrendered his ego and opened his mind, the beauty and clarity of Islam became undeniable. The act of sujood, placing his face on the ground in prayer, was initially one of the hardest things he had ever done, yet within months it became his deepest source of peace.

The Discipline of Islam and the Brotherhood of Muslim Fighters

  • Khabib Nurmagomedov’s influence: Lee witnessed firsthand how devout Muslim fighters like Khabib live with unshakable discipline, driving modest cars and prioritizing family, faith, and training above all worldly distractions.
  • Training with Firas Zahabi: Lee credits the renowned coach as the first person who introduced him to Islamic values simply by the way he lived and operated, contributing to Lee’s most successful year in fighting.
  • Joe Rogan’s praise of Muslim fighters: Even mainstream commentators have acknowledged that the most dominant fighters in the world are devout Muslims whose discipline, rooted in faith, gives them an unmatched edge inside and outside the cage.
  • A purpose bigger than fighting: Lee now fights with a higher purpose, no longer chasing ego or worldly validation but striving to be held accountable before God in everything he does.
  • Standing firm in faith: Despite pushback from those trying to convert him back to Christianity, Lee remains unshaken, stating plainly: “I’m Muslim. I will die a Muslim.”

Islam Brings Clarity Where Confusion Once Lived

“When I hear people quote the Quran, I always hear the same message, the exact same message. It’s not up for interpretation. That is the word of God. I’ve spent 30 years getting on this path and there’s nothing that can change me.”

Kevin Lee’s conversion to Islam is a powerful reminder that faith can reach anyone, no matter their background or how long the journey takes. From the bright lights of the UFC to the quiet peace of prayer, Lee found what every soul searches for: purpose, clarity, and a direct connection with the Creator. His story stands as an invitation to anyone who considers themselves “spiritual but not religious” to explore what billions of Muslims have practiced for over 1,400 years. As Lee himself put it, if you are truly spiritual, open your heart to Islam and discover the path that brings you closer to God.
