Difference Between Shia and Sunni?

One of the most common questions people ask about Islam is: what is the difference between Shia and Sunni? In this episode of The Deen Show, Sheikh Kareem Abu Zaid addresses this sensitive topic with clarity and evidence, helping both Muslims and non-Muslims understand the theological distinctions and why pure monotheism (Tawheed) remains the non-negotiable foundation of Islam.

The Core Theological Difference

Sunni Muslims follow the Quran and the authentic Sunnah (prophetic traditions) as understood by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The key area of divergence with Shia beliefs involves the concept of the imamate — Shia theology attributes divine qualities to twelve imams, including knowledge of the unseen and the ability to intercede independently. This, from the Sunni perspective, crosses the boundary of Tawheed (monotheism).

“When people become divine — when people are attributed the knowledge of the unseen, the ability to harm and benefit independently — that takes them outside the boundaries of pure monotheism.”

How Extreme Love Led to Excess

  • The parallel with Christianity: Just as extreme love for Jesus (peace be upon him) led some to worship him as God, extreme love for the Prophet’s family led some to attribute divine qualities to the imams
  • Ali ibn Abi Talib’s own rejection: When people came to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said “You are Allah,” he rebuked them and told them to leave — he himself fought against this kind of exaggeration
  • The Prophet’s warning: Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that exaggeration in the virtues of righteous people is “one of the widest valleys of falsehood”

The Way of All the Prophets

From Adam to Abraham to Moses to Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all), the message has always been the same: worship the Creator alone without any intermediaries or partners. No human being, no matter how righteous, can share in the divine attributes that belong exclusively to Allah — knowledge of the unseen, the power to create, and the right to be worshipped. This is the simple, clear message of Islam that has attracted sincere seekers of truth throughout history.

For anyone confused about this topic, the solution is simple: return to the Quran and the authentic Sunnah, pray to Allah alone, and ask Him sincerely for guidance. He will facilitate the way for whoever is truly seeking the truth.
