DID YOU KNOW MUSLIMS INVENTED HOSPITALS AND COFFEE?

At the British Muslim Heritage Center in Manchester, TheDeenShow toured the House of Wisdom exhibition, a stunning showcase of the contributions Muslim civilization has made to science, medicine, architecture, and everyday life. For anyone who has ever heard the ignorant question “what did Muslims contribute to the world?” — this exhibition provides an overwhelming answer that should inspire both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Inside the House of Wisdom Exhibition

The tour revealed that Muslims pioneered inventions and discoveries that shaped the modern world. Al-Razi created the first recipe for soap, establishing the Islamic emphasis on cleanliness centuries before European nations adopted basic hygiene. Muslim artisans produced carpets of such exquisite quality that European royalty, including Queen Eleanor, specifically commissioned them. The exhibition houses rare artifacts including an authentic key of the Kaaba from 1910 and coins minted just 95 years after the Hijrah during the Umayyad Caliphate.

“You often hear the common ignorant statements from people who just don’t know — what did Muslims contribute to the world? I’m at the House of Wisdom, and I really encourage our brothers and sisters in humanity to visit one and do your research.”

Muslim Contributions That Changed the World

  • Al-Razi created the world’s first recipe for soap — cleanliness was central to Islam while much of Europe still did not practice regular bathing
  • Perfume was integral to Islamic culture, following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), long before it became fashionable in Europe
  • Muslim architecture influenced buildings across Europe, with designs and engineering techniques that still stand today
  • The first hospitals, the first universities (founded by a Muslim woman named Fatima al-Fihri), and coffee all originated from Muslim civilization
  • Islam encouraged thinking, pondering, and reflecting on creation — this intellectual tradition directly fueled centuries of scientific advancement during the Islamic Golden Age
