Of all the trials destined to befall humanity before the Last Hour, none surpasses the appearance of Al-Maseeh Ad-Dajjal — the False Messiah, the one-eyed deceiver. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), as the final Messenger with no prophet to follow him, described the Dajjal with extraordinary precision — a level of detail deliberately preserved because believers would need clarity that no successor could renew. Every prophet from Adam (peace be upon him) onward warned his people about this impostor, but it is through the authentic Sunnah alone that we inherit a complete, ungarbled portrait of this immense trial — so vivid and specific that scholars noted it is as though we could see him standing before us. Knowing him is not a matter of mere curiosity; it is a matter of faith, survival, and spiritual guidance.
The Physical Description of the Dajjal and the Mark Written Between His Eyes
- His right eye will be non-functional — described as mamsooh (abraded or wiped), like a floating grape, neither prominent nor sunken; his left eye will be covered by a thick, opaque, greenish film, bulging and defective — both eyes impaired, as Al-Qadi ‘Iyad reconciled from all the authentic narrations
- His complexion will be ruddy-white, resembling peoples of the far north, with a prominent protruding forehead, a wide neck, and a broad upper chest
- His build will be short, stout, powerfully built, and young in appearance — with a slight hunch in his back and feet set unusually wide apart when he walks
- His hair will hang in thick curly locks that resemble coiled serpents from a distance
- He will be sterile — no children will be born to him, as confirmed in multiple authentic narrations
- Written between his eyes will be the Arabic letters K-F-R (kafir — disbeliever), legible to every Muslim whether literate or illiterate, by the permission of Allah, yet concealed from those whose doom Allah has decreed — a miraculous sign whose reality Al-Nawawi and Al-Qurtubi both affirmed as literal, not symbolic
- He is a real man — not a metaphor for Western civilization or television, as some modernist scholars incorrectly claimed; the Prophet (peace be upon him) even named a specific pre-Islamic individual he most resembles, confirming beyond all doubt his physical, human existence
“No Prophet was sent but he warned his people about the one-eyed liar. He is one-eyed, but your Lord is not one-eyed, and between his eyes will be written ‘kafir.'” — Narrated by Al-Bukhari (no. 6598) from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)
The fitnah of the Dajjal will be unlike any trial the world has ever witnessed, and it is by Allah’s design that the circumstances preceding his arrival will amplify its devastation. He will emerge after three consecutive years of worldwide starvation: in the first year, one-third of rain and produce will be withheld; in the second, two-thirds; in the third, everything. When he appears amid this global desperation, he will command the sky to rain and the earth to flourish for those who accept him — not as a messenger, but as God Himself. Mountains of bread and meat will accompany him; the treasures of the earth will rise and follow him like swarms of bees; he will traverse the globe with the speed of wind-driven clouds, entering every land except Makkah and Madinah, which angels guard at every gate. His apparent paradise will in reality be hellfire, and his apparent hellfire will be cool, refreshing water — and the Prophet (peace be upon him) explicitly instructed believers: if you see the river that looks like blazing fire, close your eyes and drink from it, for it will be cool water. He will appear to resurrect the dead, splitting a man in two then reuniting his halves — yet when a believing youth refuses to acknowledge him as lord, a band of copper will appear at the youth’s neck, preventing the Dajjal from killing him; the Dajjal will then hurl the young man into the apparent river of fire, where, by Allah’s infinite mercy, that same youth will enter paradise — named by the Prophet (peace be upon him) as the greatest martyr in the sight of the Lord of all the worlds.
His Emergence, His Followers, and the Inevitable End at the Gate of Ludd
- His origin: He will emerge from the East — from Khurasan — appearing from a pass between Syria and Iraq, sweeping across the earth creating havoc wherever Muslim communities stand
- His reign: Forty days in total — but the first day will equal an entire year, the second a full month, the third a full week, and the remaining days like normal days; when the Companions asked the Prophet how they would calculate their prayers during that year-long day, his answer forms the Islamic legal basis for prayer estimation in polar regions and outer space to this day
- His followers: Seventy thousand Jews of Isfahan wearing crowns will follow him, along with many Bedouins swayed by ignorance, many women swayed by their nature, and peoples described as having faces like burnished shields — all united by either desperation or distance from genuine Islamic knowledge
- Sacred places he cannot enter: Makkah, Madinah, Masjid al-Aqsa, and the Mosque of Sinai; when he encamps at the salt flats outside Madinah, three earthquakes will shake the city and drive out every hypocrite and disbeliever to join him
- His defeat: Prophet Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, peace be upon him) will descend to the eastern minaret in Damascus, join the Mahdi and Muslim forces in Jerusalem, and pursue the Dajjal — who will begin to dissolve like salt in water upon seeing him — to the gate of Ludd in Palestine, where Prophet Isa will kill him with a spear; his forces will then be hunted down, and even trees and rocks will call out: “O Muslim, O slave of Allah, there is a Jew behind me — come and kill him!”
“Whoever hears about the Dajjal, let him keep far away from him. By Allah, a man will come to him believing himself to be a true believer and end up following him because of the doubts he casts.” — Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Al-Hakim from ‘Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him)
Knowledge — not personal bravery, not spiritual overconfidence — is the primary shield the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed in our hands against this greatest of trials. He warned us that the Dajjal will not emerge until he has been forgotten, until imams no longer speak of him from their pulpits — and so reviving this knowledge becomes an act of worship and collective duty. The practical guidance he left us is clear: cling firmly to the teachings of Islam through consistent learning and practice; memorize the first or last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf and recite the entire surah every Friday, for it carries a light from one week to the next; seek refuge with Allah from the fitnah of the Dajjal in every prayer by reciting the supplication the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself used after Tashahhud; remember Allah abundantly; and when the Dajjal appears, flee — do not trust your own spiritual fortitude to withstand him face to face, for men who considered themselves firm believers will follow him. Our children deserve to know these descriptions with the same vividness they know the fictional heroes of popular culture, and every Muslim household, every masjid, and every teacher carries a responsibility to keep this knowledge alive. May Allah, the All-Seeing and All-Knowing, protect us, our families, and the entire ummah from this greatest of all trials, and may He grant us firm faith, genuine guidance, and the spiritual clarity to see through the Dajjal’s deceptions — wherever and however they manifest.
