Dear New Muslim, a straight forward set of advice to new Muslim converts from Musa Maguire. A convert to Islam himself, Mu...

Dear New Muslim

Accepting Islam is one of the most significant decisions a person can make, but the journey does not end with the shahada. This heartfelt and practical message from a fellow convert of eight years addresses the real challenges new Muslims face and offers honest, experienced guidance on how to navigate the transition into a new life of faith.

Islam Is a Fresh Start

When you accept Islam, your past is completely wiped clean. You approach your new life like a newborn child in terms of your spiritual record. However, this clean slate also means the work begins now. It is not enough to say the words; you must put them into practice. Identifying what is crucial, both in terms of what Islam prohibits and what it requires, is the essential first step.

“Islam is a new beginning for you. The past is completely wiped clean. You have a fresh start on your life. But now that you’re Muslim, you have to start working on yourself. You have to start to change.”

Focus on What Matters Most First

  • Abstain immediately from clear prohibitions: pork, alcohol, drugs, and other major sins
  • Establish the five daily prayers, pay zakat, fast in Ramadan, and plan for Hajj when able
  • Learn the core creed of Islam: there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His final messenger
  • Do not overwhelm yourself with the flood of information from various schools of thought; take it step by step

Overcoming the Fear of Prayer and Fasting

The idea of praying five times a day and adjusting your schedule around prayer times can feel intimidating at first. Fasting an entire month from dawn to sunset seems daunting. But these acts of worship are far easier to adjust to than they appear. Countless converts before you have made the same transition and found that what seemed impossible quickly became the most beloved part of their daily routine.

“I remain as American today as I always was. I just don’t eat sausages anymore, I don’t drink beer. But in terms of culturally who I am, my sense of humor, the things I’m interested in that are permissible, it’s the same as before.”

Build Your Muslim Community

  • Do not isolate yourself; Shaytan will whisper that the community will not accept you, but most Muslims raised in America are culturally American and welcoming
  • Finding good Muslim companionship is one of the most important steps in developing and feeling secure as a Muslim
  • Being Muslim does not mean abandoning your cultural identity; it means aligning your life with your Creator’s guidance
  • Equip yourself with knowledge to navigate challenges, and remember that the path is meant to have tests that strengthen your faith
