Arnoud van Doorn served on The Hague city council for Wilders’ party and was deeply involved in its media strategy, public relations, and even speechwriting. “I had all the prejudice feelings that a lot of people in the Netherlands and the West have, like Islam is violent, it’s oppressing women, they’re all terrorists. It’s ignorance, but that is not an excuse. It’s not an excuse for other people and it’s not an excuse for me.”
The Cure for Islamophobia: Patience and Dialogue
Van Doorn emphasized that the most effective weapon against Islamophobia is patience and leading by example. He urged Muslims, especially young people, to show the world that they are normal, wise, and intelligent people who reject violence and terrorism. He expressed firm confidence that despite the efforts of media and politicians, Islam is too strong to be defeated by propaganda and misinformation.
“Despite all the efforts of media and a lot of politicians, they are not winning. Islam is too strong. But we have to be patient. Patience, I think, is the key word at this moment.”
