Almost shot in the Jungle for Islam but now wears Hijab

This is the remarkable story of Sister Mariam, a young woman from one of the most powerful tribes in Ghana, who was raised in a devout Christian family and trained to serve the church from the age of ten. She never imagined she would become a Muslim — in fact, she grew up in a community where Islam was considered an abomination. Yet deep inside, she always admired the modesty of Muslim women and felt something was missing in her spiritual life. Her journey to Islam began in Ramadan 2010, when she picked up a book about people who had embraced Islam, and everything changed forever.

A Dream, a Shahada, and the Persecution That Followed

After reading about Islam and studying its teachings for three weeks, Mariam took her shahada at just fifteen years old, fully aware of the consequences. Her family was devastated — they saw her decision as the greatest disgrace imaginable. They took her to a jungle in western Ghana, isolating her from any Muslim contact, and brought a priest daily to try to dissuade her. In a terrifying moment on the night before Eid al-Fitr, her own father wanted to shoot her for reciting Quran, and only her mother’s intervention saved her life. The next morning, she was disowned and cast out on her own in a big city with nowhere to go.

“I could feel it deep down in me — that if I don’t get this particular thing, I can’t survive. I need this in my life in order to be able to survive, and that is Islam.”

  • She survived years of hunger, loneliness, and hospitalization due to stomach ulcers caused by starvation
  • Teachers eventually discovered her situation and helped her financially to complete high school
  • She went on to study law at a university in Bosnia, all while supporting herself without any family help
  • Despite every hardship, she never once considered leaving Islam
  • She recognized that her family acted out of love and concern, even though their methods were misguided

Finding Clarity and Direct Connection with Allah

“When I was a Christian, I used to get confused — am I praying to Jesus or to God? But alhamdulillah, now all that confusion is gone. I know I’m praying to just one God, and there is nothing blocking my communication with Allah.”

Sister Mariam’s story is a testament to the power of sincere faith and the mercy of Allah, who guides whomever He wills to the straight path. She reminds us that Islam teaches the highest respect for mothers, that Jannah lies under their feet, and that loving and honoring parents is a cornerstone of the faith. Her journey — from hatred of Islam to finding it as her greatest treasure — proves that no amount of persecution, propaganda, or hardship can extinguish the light that Allah places in a sincere heart. May Allah continue to bless Sister Mariam, ease her path, and reunite her with her family upon guidance and truth.
