Name: Allah – In the Names of Allah [2/4]

Understanding the greatest name of Allah means understanding how to protect ourselves from spiritual and physical harm using the formulas Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) left for us. From treating genuine cases of demonic possession to guarding our homes with the remembrance of Allah, the Prophetic method is simple, dignified, and rooted entirely in calling upon Allah by His greatest name.

The Prophetic Method of Exorcism

In an authentic narration from Musnad Ahmad, a woman brought her afflicted child to the Prophet (peace be upon him). He opened the boy’s mouth, blew in it three times, and said: “In the name of Allah. I am a servant of Allah. Get out, O enemy of Allah.” There was no beating, no violence, no elaborate ritual — only the invocation of Allah’s name. This stands in stark contrast to the dangerous practices found in parts of the Muslim world, where people have been beaten to death in the name of exorcism.

Using Bismillah for Daily Protection

  • Entering the home — When you enter saying Bismillah, Satan tells his companions: “There is neither shelter nor supper for you here”
  • Leaving the home — Say: “In the name of Allah, I have trusted in Allah, there is no movement or power except by Allah’s permission” — and you will be guided, sufficed, and protected
  • For the evil eye — The Prophet prescribed: “In the name of Allah, may He make you well, and may He cure you from every ill, from the evil of the jealous and from the harm of the evil eye”
  • For physical ailments — Place your hand at the point of pain and say Bismillah three times, then seven times: “I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil that I find and from the evil that I fear”

Avoiding Extremes in Spiritual Matters

“The true Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands other Muslims are safe.” — Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

We must avoid two extremes: attributing every misfortune to the jinn while neglecting medical treatment, and denying the reality of the unseen world altogether. Most cases people attribute to possession are actually psychological or physical in origin. When genuine spiritual affliction occurs, the treatment is what the Prophet taught — not beatings, not elaborate rituals invented by self-proclaimed holy men. If the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not do it and his companions did not practice it, then no shaykh has the authority to introduce it into Islam.
