Allah: The Most Merciful, The Most Loving

Some people carry a deeply mistaken notion that Allah is an angry, unloving God who shows no mercy. This could not be further from the truth. The very first chapter of the Quran that every Muslim recites in prayer opens with “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful” and “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” His mercy is not an afterthought — it is the defining attribute by which He introduces Himself to all of creation.

The Vastness of Allah’s Mercy

Allah tells us in the Quran that His mercy encompasses all things. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explained that Allah divided mercy into one hundred parts, sending just one part to Earth. From that single portion comes every act of compassion we witness — a mother’s love for her child, an animal’s tenderness toward its offspring, and every expression of kindness between living beings. The remaining ninety-nine parts, Allah has reserved for the Day of Judgment for His believing servants.

“Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.” — Quran 39:53

No Sin Is Too Great for Repentance

  • The man who killed 99 people — He sought repentance and was told by a knowledgeable person to travel to a righteous town; he died on the way, and Allah commanded the earth to draw him closer to the good land so the angels of mercy would take his soul
  • Sins replaced with good deeds — The Quran states that for those who repent sincerely, Allah will replace their evil deeds with good deeds
  • The door is always open — Even those who committed shirk, murder, or other major sins can return to Allah through sincere repentance

Loving Allah Means Following His Way

“Say: If you love Allah, then follow me [the Prophet], and Allah will love you and forgive your sins.” — Quran 3:31

Claiming to love God while ignoring His commands is a contradiction. Allah prescribed just five daily prayers — not to burden us, but as a mercy that keeps us connected to our Creator throughout the day. Every time we drift away from remembrance, the next prayer brings us back. The Shaytan wants us to despair and give up, but the believer knows that no matter how many mistakes are made, the door of repentance remains open. Turn back to the Most Merciful, the Most Loving, and strive to worship Him on His terms — just as Jesus, Moses, Abraham, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all) taught mankind to do.
