Part 2 of "The Fog is Lifting" series of films on Islam, 10 scholars are speaking about Terrorism and about Jihad explaini...

Jihad On Terror

The word “Jihad” has been weaponized by media and politicians to instill fear, but its actual meaning in Arabic and Islamic tradition is far removed from the violent caricature presented on the nightly news. This comprehensive episode traces the true meaning of Jihad through the Quran, the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, and 1,400 years of Muslim civilization, revealing that its primary meaning is the inner struggle for self-improvement, charity, and justice.

The Three Levels of Jihad in Islam

The first and highest level is the spiritual jihad: the inner struggle against evil inclinations and the pursuit of self-purification. It encompasses being good to your spouse, kind to your neighbors, speaking truth in front of the oppressor, and waking up for prayer in the middle of the night. The second level is the jihad of education and dawah, sharing the truth and calling people to justice. The third level, which is the most publicized and least understood, is the physical jihad of self-defense, which has strict conditions including the prohibition of harming civilians, women, children, and even trees.

“The word Jihad in the Muslim world actually carries a very positive connotation. I know small beautiful girls with apple rosy cheeks whose names are Jihad. When you go to take an exam and you are struggling, they tell you ‘make Jihad.'” — Scholar explaining Jihad’s true meaning

What the Media Will Not Tell You

  • Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, promised Paradise for the person who gives charity so secretly that the left hand does not know what the right hand has given
  • American Muslims rushed to help during Hurricane Katrina, the Joplin tornado, and countless other disasters as an expression of jihad through service
  • The early Muslims of Medina received anonymous food deliveries at night, and only after Imam Ali’s death did they discover he was the one bringing it
  • Islam’s teachings on fighting are strictly limited to removing oppression and preserving life, family, and country, never aggression

Shaping the World Through Justice, Not Violence

“In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” — Closing reflection on Jihad

If you want to understand Jihad, invest the time to learn what it actually means from qualified Muslim sources rather than from headlines designed to sell fear. Muslims as a faith community have contributed immensely to human civilization for over 14 centuries. Their true, undistorted teachings are precisely what humanity needs today. Let us join hands in pursuing peace, justice, equality, and an all-embracing sense of human brotherhood.
