Islam, Jihad, and Sharia

Few words in modern discourse have been so systematically stripped of their meaning as Jihad and Sharia. Tossed around by media commentators, amplified by fringe provocateurs, and weaponised to generate fear, these deeply nuanced Islamic concepts have been reduced to little more than cultural boogeyman — divorced from 1,400 years of scholarship, spiritual depth, and lived practice. On a landmark episode of The Deen Show, host Eddie and scholar Joshua Evans — a former Christian youth minister who embraced Islam after years of sincere investigation — set the record straight with evidence, clarity, and the kind of disarming confidence that only comes from genuine knowledge. Their conversation is not just a defence of Islam; it is an invitation: read the Quran in context, speak to knowledgeable scholars, talk to your Muslim neighbour over a cup of chai — and allow truth to speak for itself.

Jihad: The Lifelong Struggle to Be a Better Human Being

The Arabic word Jihad means, quite simply, to strive or to struggle — and its scope in Islamic teaching is breathtaking in its breadth and beauty. The greatest Jihad, scholars agree, is the one fought within: the daily battle against one’s ego, desires, and moral failings. Classical Islamic scholarship identifies multiple dimensions of this struggle, all of which every Muslim — man, woman, young, and old — is called to engage in throughout their life. When Joshua Evans explains that a mother raising her children is performing Jihad, that a student striving for knowledge is performing Jihad, and that speaking truth in the face of oppression is Jihad, the distance between the Quranic concept and the media caricature becomes impossible to ignore. Even the Prophets of God — Jesus, Moses, Abraham, and Muhammad, peace be upon them all — performed Jihad by striving tirelessly to bring the light of divine guidance to humanity, enduring rejection, persecution, and hardship in that sacred effort.

  • Jihad al-nafs — struggling against one’s own ego, desires, and character flaws; the most fundamental and constant form
  • Jihad through knowledge — learning Islamic teachings, acting upon them, and conveying them honestly to others
  • Jihad of the tongue — speaking truth, condemning injustice, and correcting falsehood with wisdom and evidence
  • Jihad through wealth — spending in the path of God, supporting the poor, and contributing to the welfare of the community
  • Jihad in legitimate self-defence — protecting one’s life, family, property, and land when genuinely threatened — governed by strict ethical rules that forbid harm to innocents, women, children, the elderly, and non-combatants
  • Jihad against oppression — standing against tyranny and injustice, even if it is one’s own family or community committing the wrong

“Jihad is of various kinds, with one’s self, one’s wealth, by making du’aa’, by teaching and guiding, by helping to do good in any way. The greatest form of Jihad is Jihad with one’s self — going oneself and striving — followed by Jihad with one’s wealth, Jihad by speaking out and guiding others. Da’wah is also part of Jihad.” — Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him)

Sharia: God’s Blueprint for Justice, Dignity, and a Flourishing Society

If Jihad is the most misunderstood concept in Islam, Sharia runs a very close second. In Arabic, Sharia literally means the path that leads to water — a path to life itself. Its ultimate goals, as Joshua Evans explains on the show, are to ensure that society lives a just and righteous life before God: that no one goes hungry, no one is without shelter, that racism and sexism are abolished, that the wealthy cannot exploit the poor through usurious financial systems, and that every human being — regardless of gender, ethnicity, or social standing — receives the rights that God has ordained for them. Far from oppressing women, Islamic Sharia gave women the right to own property, inherit wealth, keep their earnings, refuse a marriage, and retain their own identity centuries before Western legal systems began to catch up — a historical fact that explains why the majority of converts to Islam globally are women, who often testify to feeling more secure, more honoured, and more protected within Islam than outside it. The Sharia is not a medieval relic imposed by scholars; it is the divine operating system designed by the Creator of humanity for the flourishing of humanity — complete, coherent, and in need of no amendments.

“If someone is a justice-loving, freedom-loving individual, then the idea of a Sharia law — a God-made system — should be a welcome ideology to them. Many like-minded people of many faiths who have looked at the Sharia in an unbiased way have come out publicly and stated that this is a good system, and that if it were to be implemented it would not bring about any type of tyranny or oppression.” — Joshua Evans, The Deen Show

The confusion surrounding Islam is not accidental, and it is not beyond remedy. As Joshua Evans observes, truth is a powerful thing — dangerous not in a destructive sense, but in the sense that it awakens, transforms, and liberates. When Quranic verses are read in full context rather than cherry-picked and mistranslated, when Muslim scholars are consulted rather than fringe figures with twenty followers and a media spotlight, and when the lived reality of Muslim communities is observed first-hand rather than filtered through sensationalism, a profoundly different picture emerges. Islam is a complete way of life — rooted in tawheed (the absolute Oneness of God), oriented toward accountability before the Creator, and expressed through justice, compassion, and the unceasing effort to be better. The Quran is not a book of violence; its primary themes are the Oneness of Allah, the reality of the Day of Judgement, and the stories of the Prophets sent to guide humanity. The rules and regulations governing conflict occupy only its smallest portion — and even those explicitly forbid harm to innocents. Whether it is a believer striving against moral corruption, a community advocate championing the rights of the vulnerable, or a scholar calling people back to the truth with wisdom and gentleness, every sincere effort in service of God and humanity is Jihad — and the divine framework that structures and sustains that effort is Sharia. These are not threats to civilisation; in the truest sense, they are among its most essential and enduring foundations.
