The Spiritual Journey of Hajj
Hajj is a day of forgiveness, of emancipation, and a chance for every Muslim to seek a close...

American Woman on Hajj (CNN)

On the plains of Arafat, under the Saudi sun, nearly three million Muslims gather in one of the most powerful displays of human unity the world has ever seen. For Leslie Rohn, a 49-year-old American convert from California, performing her first Hajj was a dream come true and a life-changing spiritual experience.

A Day of Forgiveness

Muslims believe the Day of Arafat is a dress rehearsal for the Day of Judgment. It is a day of forgiveness, emancipation, and spiritual rebirth. For Leslie, the significance of the day was overwhelming even before it began.

“I’m going to be praying for forgiveness for my sins. There are a lot of things that we do consciously and unconsciously. I want a closer relationship with God.”

From Catholicism to Islam

Leslie converted to Islam three years before making her pilgrimage, having grown dissatisfied with Catholicism. In Islam, she found the direct connection to God she had been yearning for:

  • She embraced Islam after searching for a more authentic relationship with the Creator
  • The Hajj was something she wanted to do from the moment she converted
  • Circumambulating the Kaaba was both physically overwhelming and spiritually transcendent
  • Beyond getting closer to God, the Hajj also brought Muslims from every nation closer to each other

“It’s a really great time to go. It’s only 95 degrees during the day, and I’m very excited. It’s something I’ve wanted to do ever since I converted.”

The Hajj is the ultimate equalizer. Rich and poor, black and white, Arab and non-Arab all stand together in identical garments before their Creator. For converts like Leslie, it is the moment when the truth of Islam becomes tangible, visible, and deeply personal in a way that nothing else can match.
