Muslim/Non-Muslim Relations: Commonly Misunderstood Qur'anic Texts - A lecture by Dr. Jamal Badawi.

Commonly Misunderstood Quranic Texts Part 4

In Part 4 of this lecture series on commonly misunderstood Quranic texts, the speaker addresses the term “kafir” and its widespread mistranslation as “infidel,” the distinction between unbelievers and disbelievers, and how the Quran’s nuanced terminology has been weaponized by those seeking to portray Islam as hostile toward non-Muslims. This is an essential presentation for anyone wanting to understand Islam’s actual stance on religious diversity and interfaith relations.

The Word “Kafir” Does Not Mean “Infidel”

The Arabic word “kafir” comes from the root meaning “to conceal” — a farmer concealing seeds in the ground performs an act of “kufr” in its literal sense. The term “infidel,” by contrast, is a European invention from the Crusades era, used by those who abused the name of Christ to justify wars against Muslims. When Crusaders arrived in Muslim lands expecting to find godless savages, they instead found people practicing the purest form of monotheism.

“Do you know who invented the term ‘infidel’? Where in the world it was invented and against whom it was used? It was not Muslims who introduced that term. It was used against them — by those who conducted the Crusades and needed to justify arousing hatred against Muslims.”

Islam’s Nuanced View of Non-Muslims

  • The Quran explicitly recognizes that Jews and Christians believe in God and share the same Lord as Muslims (Quran 29:46)
  • A person who was never properly exposed to Islam’s message is not condemned — God says He will not punish until a messenger has been sent (Quran 17:15)
  • People who were exposed to distorted information about Islam through biased sources cannot be held to the same standard as those who knowingly rejected truth
  • Ultimate judgment belongs to God alone — Muslims are not authorized to condemn anyone’s eternal fate

“How about if they read about Islam from books written by people with an agenda — people who wrote to blemish the image of Islam? They thought with all sincerity that this was correct knowledge. Who are we to judge?”

This presentation is a powerful reminder that Islam’s approach to religious diversity is far more sophisticated and merciful than critics would have people believe. The Quran advocates justice, honest dialogue, and mutual respect — and it leaves the ultimate judgment of every soul to God alone.
