In the mountains of Bosnia, history and faith converge in ways that few places on earth can rival. During a recent visit to Mount Igman near Sarajevo, The Deen Show team joined brothers from the UK — including Sabor Ahmed and Ali Dawah — to witness firsthand a mosque that was built in the middle of one of the most devastating conflicts in modern European history. What they found was not just a building, but a living testament to the unbreakable spirit of Bosnian Muslims and their deep connection to Islam.
A Mosque Born From War and Resilience
The mosque on Mount Igman was constructed during the Bosnian War in an area of intense military conflict. Its location was deliberately hidden because of the heavy fighting surrounding it. Far more than a place of prayer, this mosque served as a hospital where surgeries were performed on wounded soldiers, a school for learning, and even a center for physical training — echoing how the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used the masjid for multiple community purposes, including wrestling between prayers.
They were using lampposts as weaponry. They were making homemade weapons defending themselves against the Serbs, and it was a huge onslaught — and they managed to survive and defend. They defended Sarajevo for four years. All that they had was Iman.
Why the Bosnian Story Matters to Every Muslim
- Centuries of resilience: The Bosnian people descend from the Bogomils, who were persecuted as heretics by both Rome and Constantinople — their toughness predates their acceptance of Islam and only grew stronger through it.
- Faith under fire: Despite being severely under-resourced against a far more powerful enemy, Bosnian Muslims held firm through sheer Iman and determination.
- A model masjid: The wartime mosque on Mount Igman functioned as a true community center — a hospital, a place of worship, a command post, and a school — just as mosques did during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
- A reminder for today: The graves scattered across these mountains belong to people who died defending Islam and their families, a sacrifice that is not ancient history but happened within our lifetimes.
Reflecting on Allah’s Greatness in Creation
We worship Allah not because of what He gives us — the food, the blessings, our hearts beating, our lungs breathing — rather, we worship Allah because of who He is. Look at the nature around us and see how great Allah is. Imagine the One who created the heavens and the Earth, and you don’t have five minutes in your twenty-four hours to pray.
Bosnia: A Call to Remember and Support
The Bosnian War may have ended decades ago, but its lessons are more urgent than ever. The mosque on Mount Igman stands as proof that when Muslims place their trust in Allah, no amount of oppression can extinguish the light of Islam. These were not aggressors — they were families under attack, fighting for survival, and their faith carried them through the darkest days. Whether you are in the USA, the UK, or anywhere in the world, the story of Bosnia calls every believer to strengthen their own Iman, support dawah efforts, and never take the freedom to pray in a mosque for granted.
