Allah addresses the believers directly in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 208, with a command that many Muslims overlook: “O you who believe, enter into Islam completely and wholeheartedly, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan.” This verse is not directed at non-Muslims. It is a wake-up call for those who already claim to believe yet have not fully committed themselves to the faith.
Two Types of Incomplete Faith
This verse speaks to two groups among the Muslims. The first are those who perform the outward actions of Islam, carry Muslim names, and are raised in Muslim families, yet lack true iman (faith) in their hearts. Their worship may be for appearances rather than for the sincere pleasure of Allah. The second group consists of genuinely sincere Muslims who are trying to follow Islam but still hold onto certain non-Islamic beliefs or practices that they have not yet been willing to give up.
“Allah is saying: O you who are among the Believers who have not truly entered into Islam, enter into Islam now. You cannot enter into Islam half-heartedly or partially. You must enter into Islam completely.”
The Lesson of Shaytan’s Downfall
- Satan knew Allah better than any of us; he spoke directly with Allah and witnessed His greatness firsthand
- Yet he arrogantly decided for himself which of Allah’s commands he would obey and which he would reject
- His refusal to obey just one command, to bow to Adam, led to his eternal rejection
- If mere acknowledgment of God were sufficient for faith, Satan would be the greatest believer, yet he is the greatest enemy of mankind
Faith Requires Complete Submission
Knowing that Allah is your Creator and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His messenger is not enough on its own. True iman demands that you follow Allah’s commandments completely, not picking and choosing which ones suit your preferences. The moment a person begins deciding which of Allah’s commands to follow based on personal reasoning alone, they are walking in the footsteps of Satan, who did exactly that.
“If faith only meant knowing there’s one God and acknowledging the Prophet, then you are misguided, because who could have known Allah better than Shaytan? And yet he chose for himself which commands to follow.”
A Call to Action
- Let the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) be the judge of your actions, not your own desires
- Examine your life honestly for areas where you are holding back from full commitment to Islam
- Do not let comfort, habit, or social pressure keep you from giving up what Allah has asked you to give up
- Enter into Islam completely, and you will find the peace and purpose that a half-hearted approach can never provide
