Why She Stopped Believing – True Story

When a young Muslim woman from a practicing family announced that she no longer believed in Allah or Islam after years of studying science in college, her mother arrived at the imam’s door in tears. The story that unfolds is a powerful lesson about the critical importance of Islamic education and why the Muslim community must prioritize building the religious identity of its youth before doubt takes root and uproots everything.

Seven Years of Science, Zero Years of Quran

This young sister had checked all the boxes: Muslim family, Islamic school, generally practicing parents. Yet from high school through three years of a college microbiology program, seven years of studying science had filled her mind with questions that her religious education had never equipped her to answer. When asked a simple question, “When was the last time you read the Quran from cover to cover or read a book about the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)?” the answer was revealing. She had not done either.

If you are going to make a life-changing, life-altering decision, shouldn’t you do your research? You owe that to yourself. When was the last time you read the Quran or a book about the life of the Prophet? Do your research before you walk away.

Education Is the Answer

  • The young woman was given a translation of the Quran and a book on the Sirah (prophetic biography) and told to simply read for six weeks
  • She reached out after just three weeks saying “problem solved” and today is a practicing Muslim, praying five times a day and raising a family
  • The two foundational pillars of Islamic education are the Quran and the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
  • The companions of the Prophet used to teach their children the Sirah alongside the Quran, considering both essential to forming a Muslim identity

She reached out three weeks later saying “problem solved.” Today this sister is practicing her deen, praying five times a day, attending classes, married, and raising a family. All because of that education.

Her story is a wake-up call for every Muslim family and community. We cannot assume that attending an Islamic school or growing up in a Muslim household is sufficient to build a resilient religious identity. Without a deep, personal engagement with the Quran and the prophetic biography, our youth are vulnerable to the intellectual challenges they will inevitably encounter. The greatest investment we can make is in education, and the greatest legacy we can leave is a generation that not only knows their faith but lives it with conviction and understanding.
