Why Aren’t You Praying? (radio)

Salah is the lifeline that keeps a Muslim spiritually alive, yet it remains the most commonly neglected obligation among those who claim to believe. This Deen Show radio episode presents the case for why prayer is non-negotiable in Islam, what you stand to gain by establishing it, and what you risk by continuing to ignore the call of your Creator.

The Difference Between the Living and the Dead

A person may have a healthy body, a strong physique, and worldly success, yet be spiritually dead. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) compared the one who remembers Allah to the living and the one who does not to the dead. The Quran calls believers to “respond to Allah and His Messenger when He calls you to that which gives you life” (8:24). Prayer is that life-giving act.

“Success lies in prayer. The first of his deeds for which a person will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection will be the prayers. If found sound, he will be safe and successful. If defective, he will be unfortunate and a loser.”

Why Allah Commands Prayer

  • Allah does not need your prayer; you need it for your own spiritual survival
  • Prayer strengthens gratitude for the countless blessings Allah has given you
  • It serves as a constant reminder of Allah’s greatness and your dependence on Him
  • Even during battle, Allah did not exempt believers from praying, showing its absolute importance

The Consequences of Abandonment

The Quran is explicit: those who abandon prayer and follow their desires will face severe consequences unless they repent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the covenant distinguishing believers from disbelievers is the Salah, and whoever neglects it has disbelieved. His companions agreed that no act of worship, when abandoned, constitutes disbelief except the prayer.

“Allah has promised those who believe and do good deeds that for them there is forgiveness and a mighty reward. We can either turn away and continue living according to our whims, or we can be sincere and admit we need the Creator’s help.”

Practical Steps to Establish Prayer

  • Make prayer your top priority and Allah will bless the rest of your time
  • Go to sleep with the sincere intention of waking for Fajr and Allah will make it easy
  • Remember that prayer is the medicine for sin; the more you pray, the less you will be drawn to evil
  • Put even a fraction of the effort you invest in worldly pursuits into your connection with Allah, and watch your entire life transform
