Why Are Some Rich and Some Poor?

Why are some people born rich and others poor? Why are some born healthy while others face lifelong disabilities? These questions have troubled philosophers and theologians for centuries, and some have even used them to deny God’s justice. Islam provides a clear, logical answer: this entire life is a test, and Allah tests different people in different ways according to His infinite wisdom.

Wealth and Poverty Are Both Tests

Allah states in the Quran: “Your wealth and your children are but a test for you” (Quran 64:15). The rich are tested with the obligation of zakah — giving 2.5% of their surplus wealth annually to the poor. Very few wealthy people fulfill this obligation completely, which means many will receive reduced marks in that category. A poor person whose savings fall below the nisab threshold (85 grams of gold) is not required to pay zakah at all — earning full marks without facing the difficult test of wealth.

“Do you think that just by saying ‘I believe,’ Allah will let you go and not test you?” — Quran 29:2

The Exam Paper Analogy

  • A difficult exam is graded leniently — A person tested with poverty, illness, or hardship will be judged with mercy proportional to their difficulty
  • An easy exam is graded strictly — Those given wealth, health, and comfort face higher expectations and stricter accountability
  • Every child is born sinless — Islam rejects the idea that a handicapped child is being punished for past deeds; the child may be a test for the parents, an opportunity for them to earn the highest ranks in Paradise through patience

Allah Is Never Unjust

“Surely We will test you with fear, hunger, loss of property, loss of lives, and loss of the fruits of your toil. And give glad tidings to those who are patient.” — Quran 2:155

The differences between human beings are not evidence of divine injustice but of a comprehensive testing system. Allah tests some with health and others with disease, some with abundance and others with scarcity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said it is difficult for a rich person to enter Paradise — because wealth is among the hardest exams. When we see someone with less, we should not pity them as cursed; they may have been spared the most difficult question on the test. Depending on the facilities and challenges Allah gives each person, He will reward and judge them accordingly with perfect fairness.
