The Assault of Sins

Every human being sins — even the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) were not exempt from this reality. But what set them apart was not their perfection; it was how they responded to their sins. Dr. Hesham Al-Awadi delivers a powerful lecture on the five things the Sahabah (companions) used to do when they committed sins — lessons that every Muslim desperately needs today.

Never Lose Hope in Allah’s Mercy

The first and most important response of the companions was remorse — genuine regret for what they had done — combined with an unshakable hope that Allah would forgive them. Even after committing major sins, their hope in Allah’s mercy never declined. This is a critical distinction: committing a sin reflects badly on the person, but it says nothing about the limitless mercy of Allah. No matter how many sins you have committed — even thousands — Allah’s capacity to forgive is infinitely greater.

“Committing a sin says a lot that is bad about the person, but it says nothing about the mercy of Allah. The companions’ hope in Allah’s forgiveness never decreased, no matter how great the sin.” — Dr. Hesham Al-Awadi

The Five Responses of the Companions to Sin

Dr. Al-Awadi outlines five practical responses that the Sahabah consistently demonstrated after falling into sin. These are not just historical lessons — they are a practical blueprint for every Muslim who struggles with sin today. The companions were human beings who made real mistakes, yet their method of dealing with those mistakes earned them the highest status in the sight of Allah.

“Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds.” (Quran 11:114) — This verse was revealed in response to a companion who confessed to the Prophet, reminding us that good deeds have the power to erase sins.

A Practical Blueprint for Repentance

  • Feel genuine remorse — but never despair of Allah’s mercy, even if you have sinned a thousand times
  • Leave the sin immediately — without procrastination and without worrying about what people will think
  • Never justify your sins — do not argue or rationalize disobedience to Allah
  • Never underestimate any sin — even minor sins carry weight and deserve sincere repentance
  • Follow every sin with a good deed — believing that the good deed will not only erase the bad one but may be added to your balance of rewards

Be like the companions when you sin. They were not angels — they were human beings who made mistakes, sometimes serious ones. But they never let shame or despair keep them from returning to Allah. They repented immediately, sincerely, and persistently. That is the attitude every Muslim should adopt: sin does not define you, but your response to it does.
