Modern advances in reproductive technology, gender reassignment surgery, and organ transplantation raise profound ethical questions. In this segment of the Contemporary Issues series, Dr. Bilal Philips provides clear Islamic rulings on these sensitive topics, demonstrating that Islam has principled guidance for every new development in science and medicine.
Test Tube Babies (IVF) in Islam
Islam permits in-vitro fertilization (IVF) when it uses the egg and sperm of a married couple. The procedure of extracting the ovum, fertilizing it with the husband’s sperm, and implanting the embryo back into the wife’s womb is permissible because it does not violate the sanctity of the marital bond. However, using donor sperm or eggs from outside the marriage is strictly forbidden, as it introduces doubt about lineage — something Islam takes very seriously for the protection of family and inheritance rights.
“If the whole of humankind and the jinn got together to create a fly, they could never do it. Human beings cannot create life from inanimate matter — life is created by God alone. Scientists can only work with living material that Allah has already created.” (Quran 22:73)
Sex Change Operations and Organ Donation
- Sex change operations are not permitted in Islam. Allah created human beings as male and female, and altering one’s God-given gender is considered a form of changing Allah’s creation, which the Quran explicitly condemns as following the path of Shaytan
- Corrective surgery for genuine intersex conditions (where biological ambiguity exists) is a different matter and may be permissible to align the body with the dominant biological gender
- Organ donation is permissible in Islam based on the principle of necessity. Just as a starving person is permitted to eat forbidden food to preserve life, transplanting organs from a deceased person to save a living person is allowed
- However, killing a person to harvest their organs, or selling organs commercially, is absolutely forbidden
“Islam has a ruling applicable to every new development in human life. Nothing remains without guidance, because Islam is the complete way of life that God provided for human beings to guide them in all aspects of their existence.” — Dr. Bilal Philips
These rulings demonstrate Islam’s remarkable ability to address modern challenges using eternal principles of justice, preservation of life, protection of lineage, and respect for Allah’s creation. Islam is not opposed to scientific advancement — it welcomes it within the boundaries that the Creator has set for our benefit and protection.
