Story of the Devil Iblis and the Jinn

Few questions strike at the heart of human spirituality quite like this one: who is our true enemy, and how did this enmity begin? Islam answers with remarkable clarity, tracing the origin of evil not to abstract darkness, but to a single act of arrogance committed before the first human being drew breath. The story of Iblis — once the most devoted worshipper among the jinn, cast out of Paradise for refusing to bow before Adam — is not mythology. It is divine guidance, recorded in the Quran, that reveals why the struggle between faith and deception is the defining feature of human existence. Understanding this story is not merely an exercise in Islamic theology; it is a roadmap for protecting your soul.

Three Creations, One Divine Order — Angels, Jinn, and Humankind

Islam distinguishes between three entirely separate categories of creation: mankind, fashioned from clay; angels, created from light invisible to the human eye; and jinn, formed from smokeless fire. Unlike the popular secular notion that “spirits” are the ghosts of deceased humans or fallen angels, Islamic scholarship is unambiguous — jinn are a distinct species, with males and females, offspring and family lineages, free will and accountability before Allah. Iblis was a jinn, but one of extraordinary devotion. His worship was so consistent, so outwardly impressive, that Allah permitted him to sit within the circles of the angels — a distinction of immense spiritual honour. Yet beneath that devotion lay a fatal flaw: his worship was built on pride, not sincerity. When Allah announced the creation of Adam as the inheritor and steward of the earth, the angels responded with a question — not a challenge — asking whether this new creation would cause bloodshed and corruption as previous dwellers of the earth had. Allah answered with the words that echo through every verse of guidance that followed: “I know what you do not know.” Then came the command that would expose Iblis entirely: bow down to Adam as an act of honour and respect. Every angel obeyed, revealing their pure intentions. Iblis refused — and in that refusal, revealed his.

“How could I bow to him? You created me from fire and created him from dirt. I am better than him.” — Iblis, as recorded in the Quran

The Sin of Arrogance and the Enemy Who Walks Among Us

That single statement from Iblis — “I am better than him” — is identified in Islamic tradition as the root of virtually every form of disbelief and spiritual corruption. Pride caused him to place his own judgment above the command of Allah, the very Creator who had elevated him. Cast out of Paradise, stripped of his former honour, Iblis was given respite until the Day of Judgement — and he used that moment to make a vow: he would spend every moment of that reprieve leading human beings astray as an act of revenge. This is the enemy Islam warns us about. He operates from the unseen, influencing through whispers, temptation, and deception. One of the most sobering observations in this discussion is that his greatest tactical success may be the widespread belief that he does not exist at all — because a person who does not know their enemy cannot guard against them. Key Islamic teachings on protecting oneself from this enemy include:

  • Seeking refuge in Allah regularly — A’udhu billahi min ash-shaytanir-rajim (“I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil”) is a practice rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
  • Reciting the Quran consistently — the primary tool of Islamic exorcism (ruqyah) is the Book of Allah itself, particularly Surah Al-Baqarah and Al-Mu’awwidhatayn
  • Calling on Allah alone — Islam draws a firm line between permissible spiritual investigation and the forbidden act of calling upon jinn, spirits, or any being other than Allah
  • Recognising the signs of false practitioners — legitimate Islamic healers do not ask for your mother’s name, request items of clothing, blood, or photographs as instruments of help
  • Understanding that provisions are written — no pact with a jinn, no act of witchcraft, can grant what Allah has not decreed; our sustenance was written before we were born

“Our provisions were written before we were born. It doesn’t matter what we do — we are going to get it. So why do something that God has forbidden you to do in order to get what was already written for you?” — Islamic scholar on The Deen Show

The story of Iblis is ultimately a story about us — about the choice every human being faces between humility and arrogance, between submission to the Creator and the illusion of self-sufficiency. The jinn exist, the unseen world is real, and the enemy who declared war on humanity before Adam alayhis salam ever took his first step is still active today, working through whispers, temptations, and the seductive promise that power can be found outside of Allah. But Islam also gives us something far greater than fear: it gives us clarity. We know who the enemy is, we know how he operates, and we have been given, through the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, every spiritual tool we need to resist him. The path of faith, of genuine tawakkul (trust in Allah), of sincerely seeking guidance — these are not passive postures. They are acts of courage, chosen freely, just as Iblis chose arrogance freely. In a world saturated with paranormal obsession, occult curiosity, and spiritual confusion, Islam offers not mystery but meaning — and not fear, but the grounded certainty of a believer who knows their Lord.
