Seerah of Prophet Muhammad 10

This Seerah lecture covers a crucial chapter in early Islamic history — the three years of private da’wah during which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) quietly invited people to Islam without making any public announcements. This strategic approach, guided by divine wisdom, allowed the first Muslim community to build a strong spiritual foundation before facing the inevitable opposition of the Quraysh.

Private Da’wah — Not Secret, But Strategic

An important distinction is made between “secret” and “private” da’wah. The Prophet’s preaching was not secret — rumors about his new message spread as far as Yemen, where a man named Tufayl traveled all the way to Makkah after hearing about it. Rather, the da’wah was private: the Prophet approached only those he trusted and did not make public proclamations. Because he never stood before the Quraysh and openly declared his prophethood during these first three years, there was no public opposition, no torture, and no confrontation. This period gave the early Muslims the spiritual education they needed to withstand the severe persecution that would come later.

“For three years, the Muslims were being taught their religion without any persecution. They needed to know their faith — they concentrated on the teachings of Islam without worrying about torture or politics. This is what prepared them to face the trials later on.”

Lessons for Muslims in Every Era

  • The Prophet did not approach people he knew would reject and mock him (like Abu Lahab and Abu Jahl) during this early phase — wisdom in da’wah means choosing the right time, place, and audience
  • In circumstances of political fear or persecution, it is permissible to practice and share Islam privately without going public — this is based directly on the Prophet’s own methodology
  • The early Muslim community in Abyssinia provides a model for Muslims living as minorities: respect the laws of the land, live as peaceful citizens, and never be treacherous — if you cannot practice your faith freely, seek another place rather than plotting against your host society
  • Abu Lahab, despite his enmity toward Islam, received a symbolic reward (two drops of water in the Hereafter on Mondays) for showing happiness at the birth of the Prophet — showing that even the smallest good deed does not go unrewarded by Allah

“We are never allowed to be treacherous in Islam. If you promise to be a law-abiding citizen, you honor that promise. If you cannot practice your faith freely, go somewhere else — but do not give your oath and then betray it. That is not our religion.”

The early years of private da’wah demonstrate that building a strong foundation of knowledge and faith is essential before facing the world. The Prophet’s patience, wisdom, and strategic thinking during this period laid the groundwork for everything that followed — from the public declaration of Islam to the eventual triumph of the message across the entire Arabian Peninsula.
