When a man was filmed eating pages of the Quran to provoke and intimidate Muslims, it raised an important question for every believer: how should Muslims respond when someone deliberately desecrates what is sacred? Islam provides clear, dignified guidance rooted in the Quran and the example of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) that teaches believers to respond with wisdom, patience, and love rather than emotion and anger.
What the Quran Says About Respecting Other Faiths
Allah commands in Surah Al-An’am (6:108) that Muslims must not insult the gods of other religions, even though associating partners with Allah is a major sin in Islam. This principle extends to respecting other faiths, their followers, and their sacred texts. Islam teaches a level of tolerance and mutual respect that most people are unaware of, and this Quranic commandment proves that Islam forbids the very type of provocation this man engaged in.
“As a Muslim, I would respect all other faiths. Judaism and Christianity are religions of the Book from God. Allah teaches us in the Quran to address the People of the Book with respect.”
How Muslims Should Handle Provocation
- Do not get emotionally provoked — Responding with anger is exactly what provocateurs want; Islam is a way of life based on intellect, proof, and evidence, not blind emotion
- Call the authorities — If someone is causing a disturbance or destroying property, the appropriate response is to contact law enforcement and let them handle it
- Engage in dialogue later — If the person is not ready to listen in the heat of the moment, approach them at a calmer time for rational discussion
- Remember that extremists exist in every community — These individuals do not represent the sincere Christians who follow Jesus’s teaching to love your neighbor
“No one is born with hate — they have been taught to hate. So they can be taught to love. Let’s go for that and try to teach them love.”
Following the Prophetic Example of Love
Jesus (peace be upon him) taught his followers to keep the commandments, including loving your neighbor. Those who claim to follow Jesus while spreading hate are actually becoming a disgrace to his noble teachings. Muslims and sincere Christians share common ground in the call to love humanity, pursue justice, and worship the One Creator. When rational, good-hearted people from all backgrounds come together in respectful dialogue, the provocateurs lose their power and the truth of Islam shines through for all to see.
