We are constantly told that life is about self-discovery, about finding out who we are and reaching our potential. But Allah teaches us something far more profound: you cannot truly discover who you are until you first discover who your Creator is.
The Covenant We All Made
Allah reminds us in the Quran (7:172) that before we were even born, He extracted all of humanity from the children of Adam and asked them: “Am I not your Lord?” And every soul answered: “Indeed, we testify.” This covenant with Allah is greater than any promise between husband and wife, parent and child, or any other human relationship.
“The greatest form of worship is to get to know who Allah is, because once you truly know who Allah is, you cannot help but to worship Him, love Him, and venerate Him.”
You Become a Reflection of What You Seek
Ibn Abbas, one of the greatest scholars of the Quran, explained that the verse “I did not create mankind and jinn except for My worship” means to know Allah. This knowledge transforms us from the inside out:
- If your Creator is generous, He creates generosity within you
- If your Creator is loving, He places love inside your heart
- If your Creator is pardoning, He instills the quality of forgiveness within you
“In order to truly discover who you are and your potential, you need to discover who Allah is first, because you will become a manifestation of the things that you ask Allah for.”
The journey of self-discovery that the world promotes will always fall short because it starts in the wrong place. True self-knowledge begins with knowing your Creator. When you understand His attributes and live in accordance with His guidance, you become the best version of yourself that He designed you to be.
