Culture and Islam

When cultural traditions become confused with religious obligations, the result is a generation of Muslims who practice out of habit rather than conviction. In this important conversation with Sheikh Tofique Chaudhary, the critical distinction between Islam and inherited culture is laid bare, offering viewers a clear blueprint for practicing their faith the way the Creator intended.

Culture Is Not Islam

Across the Muslim world, cultural practices have become so intertwined with religion that many people cannot tell them apart. Some pray because it is what their family does, not because their hearts are truly connected to Allah. Some wear the hijab as a cultural dress code rather than as an act of devotion. From reverse dowries in South Asian families to harmful practices like female genital mutilation in parts of Africa, cultural corruptions have crept into Muslim communities and are mistakenly attributed to Islam.

“By adding something new to the religion, you are actually claiming that it is deficient — that Allah did not complete His message. And that would be a tremendous thing to say.”

Why Innovation in Religion Is So Dangerous

  • Every Muslim is required to know the basics of belief and action — when this foundation is solid, the line between religion and culture becomes clear
  • Adding to the religion implies that the Quran is incomplete and the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not deliver the full message
  • The ends do not justify the means — bringing entertainment or innovations into the masjid to attract people violates core Islamic principles
  • Islam is evidence-based: just as medicine requires proven treatments, faith requires authentic sources from the Quran and Sunnah

“Islam is evidence-based. The first word revealed was ‘Read.’ We don’t just practice anything — we practice based on the evidence of the Quran and the authentic Sunnah.”

Following the Blueprint with Confidence

The beauty of Islam lies in the fact that it already contains everything a person needs for a fulfilling, joyful life. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself joked with his wives, had fun with his companions, and lived a balanced life full of warmth and humanity. There is no need to import foreign practices or water down the faith to make it appealing — when approached with knowledge and sincerity, Islam is the most complete and satisfying way of life ever given to humanity.
