Christian Catholic Nun to be, accepts Islam loves Hijab

Maria Clara’s story is unlike any other: her mother was a Catholic nun in a convent in Paraguay who left the institution, married a Palestinian man, and raised her daughter as a devoted Roman Catholic in Chicago. Baptized, first communion completed, and on the path to becoming a nun herself, Maria Clara’s life took an unexpected turn when she was sent to Palestine at just nine years old and discovered the truth about Jesus (peace be upon him) in the Quran.

From Catholic Nun’s Daughter to Muslim Woman in Hijab

Growing up trilingual — Spanish, English, and Arabic — Maria Clara was sent alone on an airplane to Palestine when her mother fell ill and her father was overseas. At school there, the principal would pull her aside and tell her stories about Jesus (peace be upon him) and Maryam from the Islamic perspective. As a 10-year-old child sitting alone on a balcony, she made a sincere prayer: “Oh God, show me a sign — is Christianity the true religion?” She looked at the trees outside, waiting for thunder, a bird, anything. That moment of sincere seeking was the beginning of her journey to Islam.

“As a young child I sat alone and started saying: Oh God, show me a sign. Is Christianity the true religion? I just wanted to see something — I was looking at the trees outside, just wanting God to show me.”

Wearing Hijab with Pride

Today, Maria Clara wears the hijab proudly, following in the footsteps of Maryam, the mother of Jesus, who is honored in the Quran with an entire chapter bearing her name. When confronted with the accusation that Islam oppresses women, her response comes from lived experience: she chose Islam freely, she chose the hijab freely, and she has never felt more dignified and proud.

  • Her mother, a former nun, pushed her toward the convent — but Allah had a different plan for her life
  • Islam does not require abandoning love for Jesus — it deepens that love by following his actual teachings of pure monotheism
  • The Quran’s stories about Jesus and Maryam resonated with everything she already believed as a sincere Catholic
  • Her nine children are being raised as Muslims, continuing a legacy that began with a little girl’s prayer on a balcony in Palestine
  • The hijab is not oppression but liberation — imitating the most honored woman in Islamic tradition, Maryam the mother of Jesus
