Surah an-Nas

Surah An-Nas is the 114th and final chapter of the Holy Quran, a powerful supplication in which Allah teaches us to seek His protection from the evil whispers that threaten our hearts and minds. This recitation brings to life the beauty and urgency of these closing words of divine revelation.

Seeking Refuge in the Lord of Mankind

The surah begins by calling upon Allah through three of His attributes related to His care for humanity: Rabb An-Nas (the Lord of mankind), Malik An-Nas (the King of mankind), and Ilah An-Nas (the God of mankind). This triple invocation emphasizes that only Allah has the power to protect us from the whisperer who targets the very core of our being — our hearts.

“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer who whispers in the hearts of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind.” — Quran 114:1-6

Daily Protection Through Recitation

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommended reciting Surah An-Nas along with Surah Al-Falaq and Surah Al-Ikhlas three times each morning and evening as a shield against harm. These short but mighty surahs serve as a spiritual armor that every Muslim can carry throughout the day.

  • Surah An-Nas addresses the unseen battle against evil whispers
  • It is part of the daily morning and evening adhkar (remembrance)
  • The “retreating whisperer” flees when a person remembers Allah
  • Reciting it regularly is a Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

“No person has ever sought refuge with anything better than these two surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Nas).” — Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
