Islam & Global Warming

Long before the modern environmental movement, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught principles of conservation, sustainability, and care for the earth that remain strikingly relevant today. In this episode, Dr. Muhammad — a former professor at Johns Hopkins University — explains how Islam provides a comprehensive framework for addressing global warming and environmental stewardship.

The Prophet’s Teachings on Greening the Earth

Islam is not merely a religion of rituals — it is a complete way of life that addresses every aspect of human existence, including how we treat the natural world. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged planting trees and cultivating the land, teaching that whoever plants a tree from which a person, bird, or animal eats, it is counted as an act of charity. This teaching, delivered 1,400 years ago by a man living in the Arabian desert, demonstrates remarkable foresight and divine wisdom.

“Try to imagine that a person who was living 1,400 years ago in the desert of Arabia was thinking of making the earth green. This is a sign that he is a messenger of the Creator.”

Conservation of Water and Resources

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught Muslims to conserve water even during ablution (wudu), using only a small cupful — a remarkable teaching given the scarcity of water in Arabia
  • Even in times of war, Islamic law forbids cutting trees, burning green areas, or harming women, children, or the elderly
  • The famous hadith teaches that if the Day of Judgment arrives while you hold a seedling, plant it before you stand — a testament to the Islamic spirit of positivity and environmental care
  • Islam provides a blueprint for a “department of agriculture” mentality, encouraging ongoing cultivation as a continuous act of worship

“If the Hour begins while you have a seedling in your hand, and you are able to plant it before you stand up — do it. The Prophet wants every aspect of life to be positive.”

A Message of Environmental Responsibility for All

As the scholar Bernard Shaw once remarked, had the Prophet Muhammad been alive today, he would have solved the world’s problems while drinking a cup of tea. These teachings on environmental care are not just for Muslims — they offer practical, timeless wisdom for all of humanity. By returning to these prophetic principles of conservation, tree-planting, and respect for the natural world, we can all contribute to reversing the damage of global warming and building a greener, healthier planet.
