Happy Muslims

A viral video of Muslims dancing to Pharrell’s “Happy” sparked intense debate within the Muslim community, with accusations flying in both directions. This thoughtful response cuts through the noise by addressing something far more important than the video itself: the way Muslims treat each other when they disagree, and the Islamic principles that should guide our understanding of what is permissible and what is not.

Brotherhood Before Judgment

Before addressing the content of any viral controversy, we must address how we engage with each other. Accusing fellow Muslims of being extremists or hypocrites from behind a keyboard, questioning their intentions without evidence, and issuing blanket declarations of haram without scholarly qualification are all far more damaging to the community than any video could be. The speaker reminds us that declaring something forbidden requires evidence, because every time you pronounce something haram, you are effectively signing on Allah’s behalf.

Every time you declare something haram, you are signing on Allah’s behalf. Without evidence, your statement carries no weight. And every natural act is halal unless proven otherwise. So before making bold declarations, bring your evidence.

The Islamic Framework for Understanding Happiness

  • Islam teaches modesty and protection: if the religion prohibits a woman from wearing an ankle bracelet because it attracts attention, what about public displays that go far beyond that?
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that a woman who wears strong perfume and passes by men such that they desire her has committed a serious sin; the principle of prevention applies broadly
  • Any act of worship requires two conditions to be accepted: sincere intention for Allah alone, and correctness according to the Quran and Sunnah
  • True happiness comes from contentment in the heart through faith (iman) in Allah, not from external circumstances or viral moments

You might cry and still have contentment in your heart. That can only happen when you have true iman, true belief in Allah. True happiness is not about a video or a song. It is about your relationship with your Creator.

The path to genuine happiness is not found in trending videos or social media approval but in obedience to the Creator and knowledge of His guidance. Before embarking on public dawah projects, consult qualified scholars who understand both your culture and the religion. Seek alternatives that are both effective and pleasing to Allah. And above all, guard the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, because a community that tears itself apart over every controversy will never be able to fulfill its greater mission of inviting humanity to the truth.
