When Allah breathed the ruh into Adam, He gave humanity not just physical life but spiritual life: a yearning for purpose, a conscience, and a connection to the Divine. Sheikh Yasir Qadhi explains that when we obey Allah, both our physical and spiritual lives flourish, but when we disobey, both wither away, leading to what the scholars call the hardening of the heart, the worst disease a believer can suffer.
The Disease of a Hardened Heart
Allah mentions the hardening of the heart in the Quran as both a symptom of disobedience and a punishment for nations that turned away from His guidance. The signs include finding no pleasure in worship, feeling no remorse after sinning, and being unmoved by the Quran. We spend enormous time and money on our appearance, shampooing, conditioning, and standing before the mirror, yet our Prophet said that Allah does not care about our outer bodies or facial features. What Allah cares about is our hearts and our deeds.
“Our Prophet said: Verily Allah does not look at your outer bodies nor your facial features. What Allah cares about is your heart and your good deeds.” — Sheikh Yasir Qadhi
The Way Out of Despair
- No matter how far you have fallen into sin, the solution is simply to turn back to Allah, and He will accept you
- Imam Shafi, on his deathbed, said: “A little bit of Your mercy is all I need to forgive a lot of my sins”
- Allah will change sins into good deeds for the repentant believer out of His infinite mercy
- Giving up hope of Allah’s mercy is itself one of the greatest sins, placed alongside shirk by the Prophet Muhammad
Allah’s Mercy Has No Limits
“Say, O My servants who have committed sins and wronged themselves: do not give up hope of Allah’s mercy. Verily Allah forgives all sins.” — Quran 39:53
The Muslim never despairs. No matter what you have done, no matter how far you have strayed, the door of repentance is always open. Turn back to Allah with sincerity, and He will not only forgive you but transform your sins into good deeds. That is the mercy of the One who created you, and there is nothing in this world or the next more beautiful than experiencing it.
