Shaykh Yasir Qadhi gives a detailed analysis of the life of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) from the original sources...

Seerah of Prophet Muhammad 18

This Seerah episode covers the dramatic events surrounding the end of the Quraysh boycott against the Banu Hashim and the three devastating calamities that followed in quick succession — making this period known as the Year of Sorrow (Aam al-Huzn). Within just two months, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lost his beloved uncle Abu Talib and faced trials that would test even the strongest of hearts.

The Death of Abu Talib — A Heartbreaking Lesson in Guidance

Just weeks after the Banu Hashim returned from their self-imposed exile following the economic boycott, Abu Talib fell gravely ill. The Prophet rushed to his uncle’s bedside and pleaded with him to say La ilaha illallah — just one statement that would allow the Prophet to intercede for him before Allah. Abu Talib was on the verge of uttering it, but Abu Jahl and Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah kept pressuring him, saying: “Are you going to abandon the religion of Abdul Muttalib?” Their relentless interference continued until Abu Talib’s final words were that he remained upon the religion of his forefathers.

“Oh my uncle, say La ilaha illallah — one word that I will use to argue on your behalf before Allah.” Despite the Prophet’s emotional plea, Abu Talib passed away without accepting Islam — a devastating reminder that guidance belongs solely to Allah, and even the most beloved Prophet cannot guide whom he wishes.

Lessons from the Year of Sorrow

  • Allah revealed Quran addressing this very incident: “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are relatives” — setting a clear theological boundary between love for family and the realities of divine justice
  • Abu Talib’s death left the Prophet without his key political protector in Makkah, emboldening enemies like Abu Lahab and Abu Jahl to escalate their persecution
  • When Abu Lahab briefly offered protection and then withdrew it after learning the Prophet’s position on Abdul Muttalib’s fate, the Prophet was left completely vulnerable — which ultimately led to his journey to Ta’if seeking new allies
  • The Prophet showed immense wisdom by giving honest but diplomatic answers — when asked about Abdul Muttalib, he said “he is with his people” rather than making unnecessarily inflammatory statements

“The Prophet’s emotion led him to say he would keep asking Allah to forgive Abu Talib unless Allah stopped him. And Allah did stop him — revealing verses that drew a clear line, teaching us that divine commands must always take precedence over personal feelings, no matter how deep.”

The Year of Sorrow teaches every believer that trials are an inevitable part of the journey of faith. The Prophet (peace be upon him) endured the loss of his protector, faced increased hostility, and yet never wavered in his mission. His steadfastness during the darkest period of his life in Makkah paved the way for the miraculous events that would soon follow.
