This Seerah lecture explores the early childhood of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), focusing on the fascinating Qurayshi tradition of sending newborns to be raised in the desert by Bedouin wet nurses. While we have limited information about the first 40 years of the Prophet’s life, every detail that has been preserved carries profound wisdom and insight into how Allah was preparing His final Messenger for the greatest mission in human history.
Why the Prophet Was Raised in the Desert
Among the nobility of the Quraysh, it was customary to send infants away from the city to be raised in a healthier, more austere environment. This practice served multiple purposes: reducing infant mortality by removing the child from disease-prone urban settings, building physical stamina and resilience, teaching pure classical Arabic away from the mixed dialects of a trading city, and preventing the excessive pampering of grandparents and extended family. The hardships of desert life made the challenges of Makkah seem like luxury when the child eventually returned.
“Children adapt to their circumstances much more easily than adults. A child raised in a difficult environment grows up content, resilient, and strong. The Quraysh had this long-term vision: raise the child in the harshest conditions so that the hardships of Makkah appear like luxury.”
Practical Lessons for Modern Life
- As Muslims, we take consolation in the belief that anything we truly need to know about the Prophet’s life, Allah has preserved — what has been lost was not essential for our guidance
- The Qurayshi practice teaches a timeless parenting principle: sheltering children from all difficulty does not build character; measured exposure to hardship produces strength and resilience
- For those struggling with depression or spiritual emptiness, the lecture offers practical advice: increase worship (Quran, dhikr, salah), seek beneficial knowledge, maintain the daily adhkar (morning/evening supplications), and surround yourself with righteous Muslim company
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that remembrance of Allah (dhikr) is a “protected fortress” — a double fortification that shields the believer from Shaytan’s whispers and attacks
“When you have dhikr of Allah, you have a fortress — a protected, fortified barrier against Shaytan. Increase your Quran, increase your remembrance, increase your prayers. These are the actions that bring about immediate spiritual satisfaction.”
The early childhood of the Prophet (peace be upon him) reminds us that Allah’s plan for His chosen servants begins from the very first moments of life. Every circumstance, every trial, and every blessing was divinely orchestrated to shape the man who would carry the final message to all of humanity.
