Don’t Be Sad (Radio)

Feeling sad? Depressed? Overwhelmed by the trials of life? In this uplifting Deen Show radio episode, Eddie delivers a powerful reminder straight from the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him: do not be sad. Allah does not want His servants to drown in grief, and He has provided the perfect antidote for every form of sadness, anxiety, and depression that afflicts the human heart.

What the Quran Says About Sadness and Patience

Allah addresses the believers directly in multiple verses, commanding them to bear with patience whatever befalls them and reminding them that He is always with those who are patient. Sadness, while a natural human emotion, is not something Islam encourages a person to dwell in. Instead, Islam redirects the believer to action, prayer, and trust in Allah’s perfect plan. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: “If Allah loves a people, He makes them go through trials. Whoever is satisfied, for him is contentment. Whoever is angry, upon him is wrath.”

“Allah says in the Quran: ‘So do not become weak, nor be sad.’ And in another verse: ‘Bear with patience whatever befalls you.’ Allah does not want you to be sad — He wants you to trust in His plan.”

The Islamic Prescription for Overcoming Depression

  • Remember that trials are a sign of Allah’s love — the prophets were tested most, yet they were the most beloved to Allah
  • Stay away from sins and evil company that drag you down; surround yourself with righteous people who increase your faith
  • Think good thoughts of Allah at all times — He is the Most Merciful and has promised that with every hardship comes ease
  • The Quran states: “Verily along with every hardship is relief” — this is the promise of your Creator

“Sadness prevents one from action instead of compelling one toward it. The heart does not benefit through grief. The most beloved thing to the devil is to make the believer sad. Don’t give him that satisfaction.”

If you are going through a difficult time, know that you are not alone. Allah sees your struggle, He hears your prayers, and He has promised that relief follows every hardship without exception. Set your eyes on the prize of Jannah, be patient, and continue doing good even when it feels impossible. The formula is in the Quran and the Sunnah — learn it, live it, and trust that your Creator always wants what is best for you.
