Family Member of 9/11

This episode features the remarkable stories of two American women who accepted Islam after the September 11th attacks — a time when becoming Muslim in America required extraordinary courage and conviction. Angela Collins and Safia (formerly Elizabeth) share their journeys, demonstrating that for those who seek truth honestly, even the most tragic events can become catalysts for finding the light of Islam.

Finding Islam After 9/11

One of the guests lost eight family members in the September 11th attacks, yet she refused to blame Islam for the actions of individuals. After visiting a mosque and feeling an overwhelming sense of peace, she began studying Islam and eventually embraced it. Angela Collins had been researching Islam since 1997 after hearing the call to prayer in Turkey, and September 11th actually helped her understand the difference between the true teachings of Islam and the extremist distortions that have nothing to do with the faith.

“What happened on September 11th was a motivating matter for me. After reading the Quran, it was clear — the attacks were against the teachings of Islam. The Quran is the word of God, and its message of peace and mercy could not be clearer.”

Courage in the Face of Adversity

  • Angela chose to keep her Western name to prove that Islam has deep connections to the West and is not limited to any culture
  • Many studios refused to host Angela for interviews, fearing they would be seen as “promoting Islam” or “exploiting 9/11”
  • Both women faced family challenges and social pressure but remained steadfast in their faith
  • Their message: Islam is wonderful, and if people knew its true teachings, happiness would prevail

“I kept my name Angela Collins because Islam is a global religion. I want people to know that Islam reaches the West and that Americans can find a deep connection with this faith. Adopting Arabic names is beautiful and respectful, but it is not mandatory.”

These women’s stories are a powerful testament to the truth and beauty of Islam. In a time when the entire world was being told to fear Muslims, they looked past the propaganda, studied the actual teachings, and found the greatest gift of their lives. Their courage and conviction continue to inspire Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
