135 Shahadahs People Accepting Islam

When 135 people stand and declare the Shahada in a single gathering, it is not merely a statistic — it is a testament to the timeless, universal pull of a faith that speaks directly to the human soul. On this memorable night, men and women of diverse backgrounds — African-Americans, white Americans, former Christians, longtime spiritual seekers — bore witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His final messenger. Sheikh Yousef, a former Christian whose own journey to Islam began through deep study of the Bible and an encounter with a Catholic priest who also embraced the faith, guided the audience through one of the most profound theological conversations available to a seeking heart: what is Islam, what does it ask of you, and what does it give in return?

Accepting Islam Is Easier Than You May Have Been Led to Believe

“The Religion in the sight of Allah is Islam.” (Qur’an 3:19)

  • No certificate, authority, or formal ceremony is required — the Shahada is valid wherever it is sincerely spoken, at any moment, before any number of witnesses.
  • Islam has grown across every American demographic, with between 6 and 10 million Muslims in the United States and approximately 1,200 mosques — a number that continues to grow.
  • Da’wah reaches the most isolated communities — Sheikh Yousef’s outreach serves nearly 1,000 Muslim inmates across 29 correctional facilities in South Carolina alone; the sister of one inmate converted simply by reading Islamic material her brother had asked her to print but not read.
  • Free Qur’ans are available to anyone sincerely seeking guidance, shipped worldwide at no cost through dedicated Islamic outreach organisations.
  • Islam is not just belief — it is practice: the Qur’an asks, “Do they think they will be left alone just because they say ‘we believe’?” Sincere faith is expressed through the Five Pillars: the Shahada, prayer, Zakah, fasting in Ramadan, and Hajj.
  • Zakah goes directly to the poor and orphans — there is no hierarchical structure collecting wealth in Islam; every Muslim’s obligatory giving reaches those who need it most.
  • Islam affirms that all prophets — Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad ﷺ — brought the same message: submit to the one Creator. The very word “Islam,” derived from the Arabic for submission, is what every true prophet lived and taught.

The story of Islam’s growth in America is not an abstract demographic trend — it is a collection of personal testimonies, each one a human being who sat with a question, opened a book, visited a mosque, or simply read something they were told not to. Sheikh Yousef himself described his own conversion not as a departure from Christianity but as a deepening of it: he came to understand who Jesus (peace be upon him) truly was, and found himself worshipping the same God that Jesus worshipped. This insight — that Islam honours all the prophets while preserving the final divine revelation in its original, unaltered Arabic — is often the spiritual turning point for those who come to the faith through sincere inquiry. As Sheikh Yousef reminded the gathering, do not blame a religion for what individual people do; judge the faith by its scripture, its Prophet ﷺ, and its principles — and when you do, you will find a message of justice, mercy, and clarity unlike any other.

The Shahada: Simple Words, Immeasurable Weight

To pronounce the Shahada — Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah — is among the simplest things a human tongue can do. Sheikh Yousef demonstrated just how natural its sounds are: the gentle syllables of la ilaha illa Allah (there is no god except the Almighty God) are so soft that, as he noted warmly, babies make the same sounds without knowing what they mean. The first part of the declaration is a complete theology — a rejection of every false deity, whether wealth, ego, status, or stone — and an affirmation that only the One who created all existence deserves worship. The second part, that Muhammad ﷺ is Allah’s messenger, is a commitment to follow the prophetic way as the divinely guided path for how to live. Islam is honest about what the journey requires: sincerity of heart, consistent practice, and a willingness to be tested. It does not promise Paradise to everyone who utters the words; Allah alone, the best of judges, knows what lies within each soul. What Islam does promise is the way — clear, open, and infinitely merciful to those who strive.

“Say: If you love Allah, then follow me — Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.” (Qur’an 3:31)

The 135 individuals who stood on this night to bear witness did not do so because they were promised an easy road. They did so because something in the message resonated with the deepest truth they had been carrying — often for years — that there is one God, that this life is a trust, and that the purpose of every human being is to return to their Creator in a state of conscious, willing submission. For those still on the threshold, still weighing what it means to open the heart to this guidance and this faith, the invitation remains exactly what it has always been: simple, free, and boundless in its mercy. As the Qur’an reminds us, “Whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks” (2:256). May Allah grant every sincere seeker the clarity to recognise the truth, the courage to embrace it, and the steadfastness to live it — and may the faith of those 135 souls be a light that spreads to hearts we have not yet imagined.
