Abdur-Raheem Green talks about an important question that is in the minds and in the tongues of many people. It is a claim...

Does Islam Oppress Women?

The accusation that Islam oppresses women is one of the most persistent slanders against the faith. In this powerful lecture, the speaker does not merely defend Islam — he turns the question around and demonstrates that the ideology truly responsible for the degradation of women is the one pointing the finger. By carefully defining what oppression actually means and examining it through Islamic principles, a very different picture emerges.

What Does Oppression Really Mean?

Oppression means denying something its rights — taking away what is natural and essential to its wellbeing. Just as confining a killer whale to a tiny tank when it was created to swim thousands of miles is oppression, forcing women into roles that contradict their God-given nature is oppression. The question then becomes: who truly understands and honors the nature of women?

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that oppression will stand as darkness on the Day of Judgment. Allah tells us in the Quran that He does not love the oppressors. Islam itself condemns oppression and orders us to fight against it — this is one of the very reasons we are called to jihad: to relieve people from tyranny.”

Islam’s Balanced View of Women’s Rights

  • Spiritual equality: Men and women are equal before Allah in worship, accountability, and reward for good deeds
  • Honoring motherhood: Islam elevates the role of the mother as one of the highest stations a human being can hold — Paradise lies at the feet of the mother
  • Education with purpose: Islam encourages women’s education, but the greatest achievement is raising righteous children who carry the faith forward
  • Protection, not restriction: Islamic guidelines for modesty and family life are designed to protect women’s dignity, not diminish it
  • Mutual accountability: The Prophet taught that how a man treats his wife reflects in how his ruler treats him — oppressing women brings divine consequences

A Warning Against Ideological Defeat

“When the man does not treat his wife with the justice, gentleness, and kindness that Islam has ordered, Allah will put over him a tyrannical ruler to oppress him, just as he oppressed his wife. The way the ruler treats the people reflects the way the man treats his wife.”

The real danger Muslims face is not external critique but internal ideological surrender — adopting values that measure success by careers and degrees rather than by raising righteous families. Islam calls Muslims to think with the Quran and Sunnah, not with imported ideologies that have already proven their failure in the societies that created them. When Muslim families build their foundations on taqwa (God-consciousness), the success of this life and the next will follow.
