Defending the Prophet Against Orientalist Critique Part 1

In this powerful lecture featured on The Deen Show, a renowned scholar addresses how Muslims should respond to orientalist attacks on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), particularly in the wake of the Danish cartoon controversy. The presentation combines academic rigor with spiritual wisdom, offering Muslims a comprehensive framework for defending the honor of the Prophet while maintaining dignity, intelligence, and Islamic character.

Freedom of Speech and Double Standards

The speaker makes a compelling case that attacks on the Prophet are not truly about free speech. Every society has cultural taboos and lines that cannot be crossed without consequences. Racist remarks, Holocaust denial, and anti-Semitic speech all carry severe social or legal penalties in Western countries — yet insulting the Prophet of Islam is somehow treated differently. The double standard is stark: in 13 European countries, questioning the Holocaust is a criminal offense, while mocking Islam’s most sacred figure is defended as a fundamental right.

“We are not asking for such things to be made illegal. What we are asking is that they become culturally taboo — self-imposed silencing, not legal silencing. Fifty years ago, it was possible to say things about African-Americans that you cannot say now. The same applies to the Jewish community. We as Muslims need to do the same thing.”

Three Categories of Attacks on the Prophet

The scholar identifies three primary modes of attack against the Prophet’s character, each requiring a different response:

  • Outright fabrications — lies with no historical basis, such as the false claim that the Prophet suffered from epilepsy or died in 666 CE
  • Distorted truths — factual events presented through a twisted lens, such as describing the Medinan military campaigns as “highway robbery” while ignoring 13 years of Qurayshi persecution
  • Attacks on cultural norms — criticizing 7th-century Arabian practices by 21st-century Western standards, ignoring that cultural values have always changed across time and place

“When you cannot attack the message, you begin to attack the messenger. It is psychologically gratifying for those who reject the message to reject it based upon rejecting the messenger rather than the message. Intellectuals do not use this tactic — it has always been used by those unwilling to engage the actual teachings.”

The Quranic Response

The Quran itself provides the ultimate guidance for handling such attacks. Allah consoles the Prophet by reminding him that every prophet before him was ridiculed and mocked, and He promises that this will continue until the end of time. The prescribed response is patience, piety, and positive action — not emotional outbursts or counterproductive violence. The best defense of the Prophet’s honor is not fancy rhetoric or academic debates, but sincerely following his Sunnah and demonstrating through good character that he was sent as a mercy to all of creation.
